General Dynamics Named Edwards Air Force Base Project Team of the Year
FAIRFAX, Va. – General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), was recently named Edwards Air Force Base Project Team of the Year by the 95th Air Base Wing Commander. General Dynamics was recognized for its continuing efforts on the Combat Information Transport System (CITS) project at Edwards AFB, Calif., which was awarded in April 2006 under the Network-Centric Solutions (NETCENTS) contract. This is the largest CITS Information Transport System (ITS) base infrastructure project awarded to date under the NETCENTS contract.
The General Dynamics tasking includes system survey and design, product selection, installation, legacy system integration, testing, training and post-cutover support. The project team recently completed the system design and is now in the project installation phase. The General Dynamics design is a state-of-the-art Ethernet over Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) system supporting 16,312 system users. The completed system will include over 210 miles of new fiber optic cable connectivity to 369 buildings situated throughout Edwards AFB’s 301,000 acres. This new network will significantly improve the performance and reliability of support to base voice, video and data networks while providing scalability for future growth.
This is the first time a civilian contractor has been selected for this award at Edwards AFB. The General Dynamics CITS project team competed against numerous other base construction and telecommunication project teams that were nominated for the award at the squadron, group and wing level. The General Dynamics team won monthly and quarterly competitions before winning the annual competition.
“General Dynamics continually strives to exceed our customers’ expectations,” said Charlie Plummer, vice president and general manager of Air Force IT Solutions for General Dynamics Information Technology. “Project management excellence and the consistency and quality of our solutions allowed the CITS team to complete the survey and design effort ahead of schedule. General Dynamics is pleased to receive this honor from the Air Force.”
NETCENTS is a five-year $9 billion acquisition initiative to provide the Air Force, Department of Defense and other federal agencies with the complete range of information technology, networking, telephony and security services, solutions and products. General Dynamics was one of eight companies awarded prime contracts under the indefinite quantity/indefinite delivery (ID/IQ) initiative.
