GDIT's Military Health Team is hiring a Technical Editor to support the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR) team under the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD) based out of Silver Spring, Maryland.

The AFHSD is the central medical surveillance and epidemiological resource for the U.S. Armed Forces. The MSMR, the AFHSD’s flagship publication, is a peer-reviewed journal launched in 1995. The MSMR provides estimates of the incidence, prevalence, distribution, impact, and trends of health-related conditions in service members and military associated populations. Modeled after the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), the MSMR is the primary vehicle for disseminating medical surveillance information of broad interest throughout the DoD.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Coordination of the internal and external review process for all MSMR manuscripts including communication with reviewers; preparation of reviews for manuscript authors and receipt of author responses and revisions
  • Proofing and editing of all MSMR manuscripts prior to publication
  • Oversight of MSMR layout and coordination with graphic artist
  • Communicating with MSMR editorial staff, external authors, and subject matter experts in coordinating/ preparing the manuscripts for publication
  • Maintain editorial and publication calendar and ensure that manuscript and MSMR deadlines are met
  • Develop MSMR manuscripts including identification of topics for publication, related literature review, and collaboration on development of analysis plans

WHAT YOU'LL NEED (required):

  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or similar
  • 2 + years of related experience preparing and editing technical reports and manuscripts
  • 2 + years of related experience in public health, health communication, or similar
  • Must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Must be able to meet recurring and frequent deadlines and manage publication timelines.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • US Citizenship with the ability to pass a Tier 3 (T3) security investigation

WHAT WOULD BE EVEN BETTER (preferred):

  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat and InDesign or similar software
  • Experience in writing or editing manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed medical journals preferred
  • Experience with American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style preferred
  • Active T3/ Secret Clearance
