Senior Epidemiologist (PhD/SAS)

GDIT is searching for a Senior Epidemiologist, who will provide support to the Epidemiology and Analysis section (E&A) of the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD), a component of the Defense Health Agency (DHA).

The Senior Epidemiologist will perform a broad and complex range of epidemiologic activities for the surveillance of illness, disease, and injury among service members and DoD beneficiaries including the application of principles of population based public health, disease surveillance, and epidemiology to large military health system (MHS) data sets.

Our client’s vision is to be the central epidemiological resource and a global health surveillance resource for the U.S. Armed Forces.  The AFHSD provides timely, relevant, actionable, and comprehensive health surveillance information in order to promote, maintain, and enhance the health of military and military-associated populations.  

In this role, a typical day will include:

• Providing consultative support within 1 to 3 business days from receipt of request on a wide variety of health surveillance questions on military-related populations to personnel within AFHSD, preventive medicine and public health professionals, key military leaders, policy leaders, and researchers throughout the DoD.
• Assisting in formulation of sound epidemiological studies (i.e., hypothesis generation, study concept and design, data retrieval from AFHSD and other DoD databases, analytic techniques, and reporting). Determine the feasibility of supporting requests for information using the data available to AFHSD.
• Using expertise in SAS to analyze personnel and health data for military-related epidemiological studies and review SAS code written by AFHSD analysts.
• Ensuring timely completion of analysis, summaries, and reports produced by E&A.
• Ensuring data quality of reports, analyses, and products produced and distributed by E&A are of highest quality and accuracy.
• Preparing of ad hoc briefings, white papers, summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations on health surveillance.
• Collaborating or consulting with Government and contract personnel within AFHSD or from other DoD/Federal agencies in planning and designing sound epidemiological studies including standardizing surveillance case definitions, methodology, analysis, and reporting.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD Degree in epidemiology, public health, or related discipline
• 5+ years of experience conducting health analysis, including study design, data analysis, and results interpretation
• 3+ years of experience with using statistical analysis software (SAS)
• 3+ years of experience with applied epidemiology
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• US Citizenship
• NACLC (Tier 3) clearable

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Active SECRET clearance preferred
• Prior experience using Military Health System (MHS) data or VA data preferred
• Experience with SAS at a higher level, including SAS macros and DATA Step preferred
