GDIT is seeking a Technical Writer to join our team supporting the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO), Office of Corporate Information Systems to provide Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Support Services of their Corporate Business Systems (CBS O&M). As the Technical Writer supporting the DOE CBS O&M program, you will support DOE’s Corporate Business Systems, used by over 14,000 users to fulfill the agency’s mission to promote energy independence, progress scientific research, and protect the nation through nuclear security.  

You will be part of a 60+ person team supporting DOE on multiple task orders under our Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA). BPA services include task order management, database management, IT security, Tier 1 help desk, support of various business applications for financial management and acquisitions management, and business intelligence. Services on this single award BPA with a Period of Performance through early 2028 will be performed at the DOE office located at 20300 Century Boulevard, Germantown, MD, 20874. In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Gathers, analyzes, and composes technical information. 
  • Conducts research and ensures the use of proper technical terminology. 
  • Translates technical information into clear, readable documents to be used by technical and non-technical personnel. 
  • Coordinates contract deliverables process, including reviewing and editing deliverables prior to submission, and processing customer comments, edits, and re-submission. 
  • Attend meetings with stakeholders to capture technical and business requirements as required
  • Prepare technical and business documentation according to PWS requirements and task order delivery schedule
  • Supports creation and editing of program presentation materials in PowerPoint. 
  • Publish documentation and work products on GDIT SharePoint site and/or customer portal. 
  • Create and maintain program documentation/briefing templates.
  • Ensure technical documentation is accurate, complete, meets editorial and customer specifications and adheres to standards for quality, graphics, coverage, format, and style.
  • Supports program Task Order Leads and team members with writing/editing standard operating procedures (SOPs), job aids, training materials, functional and technical design documents, and knowledge articles. 
  • Performs a variety of complex administrative tasks in support of a program.
  • Schedules meetings and develops Agendas and Meeting Minutes
  • Coordinates Weekly and Monthly Progress Reporting
  • Coordinates onboarding and offboarding of team members, following the DOE and GDIT procedures
  • Works with project managers to gather project/task status. 
  • Supports risk management process by assisting risk owners in writing risk statements and mitigation plans.
  • Supports action item owners in writing actions and gathering and reporting status of actions. 
  • Support continual service improvement (CSI) identification and tracking
  • Administer the program’s SharePoint site content, structure, groups, permissions, and provisioning users
  • Supports the Program Manager in developing and maintaining a Project Management Plan


  • Education: Associate’s degree
  • Years of relevant experience: 3 years technical writing experience in an IT environment.  Without a degree 5 years of relevant experience is required.    
  • Technical skills:
    • Experience with technical writing in an IT environment
    • Experience with standard operating procedures, job aids, training materials, and design documents
    • Experience with meeting minutes
    • Experience preparing status reports
    • Experience with preparing and editing presentation materials/briefings
    • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, SharePoint
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience in interaction with customers
    • Able to work independently and as part of a team
    • Organized and detail-oriented
    • Ability to suggest process changes 
    • Advanced Problem-solving skills
    • Ability to learn and implement new processes quickly
    • Ability to “think on your feet” and problem solve, sometimes on short notice
  • Security clearance level: Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Clearance and successfully pass a thorough Government background screening process requiring the completion of detailed forms and fingerprinting
  • Experience driving continuous improvement of business processes and technical operations. 
  • Good team player, able to manage multiple assignments, and adapt to changing client needs.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to business leaders.

  • Preferred qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree and 1 year technical writing experience in an IT environment
    • Training courses related to project management
    • ITIL v3 or v4 certification
    • Training courses related to Lean Six Sigma
    • SharePoint administration experience or certification
    • Experience with ServiceNow for incident management, problem management, service request management, and reporting/dashboards
    • Experience with federal financial, acquisitions, or budgeting systems or business processes
    • Previous experience working with/for a federal agency, or Department of Energy specifically.
