National Human Genome Research (NHGRI) Information Technology Branch (ITB) supports all IT functions, including Infrastructure (i.e. Computing, Storage, Backups, Desktop Support) and Application Development in support of its scientists, researchers and management. GDIT provides this support with its highly knowledgeable staff of Storage, Backups, Unix, Windows engineers, Application developers and project management. In this role you will work with GDIT staff and NHGRI Federal employees to execute contract deliverables.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Manage a team of around 10 systems engineers, database engineers, storage engineers, and Windows engineers.
  • Plan, recommend and assist with implementing strategies around entire infrastructure
  • Collaborate with all teams to help guide strategic hardware choices and configuration in association with the rest of the environment
  • Ensure servers are configured in accordance with HHS, NIH, and NHGRI security regulations and standards (including but not limited to minimum baseline configuration, encryption, Continuous Device Monitoring [CDM] agents, etc.).
  • Participate and adhere to change management processes
  • Ensure all system hardware and software shall be kept up-to-date in accordance with NHGRI and ITB policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the Infrastructure Team provides server, system, and file backup/restorations services using NHGRI’ tools such as NetBackup, snapshots, etc.
  • Ensure the Infrastructure Team provides system administration support for NHGRI Windows-based and Linux-based servers and systems to ensure system availability
  • Ensure the Infrastructure Team provides domain, system, and email accounts administration, including assigning groups and configuring the users’ login environments/profiles
  • Ensure the Team provides support for NHGRI centralized server patching and software deployment systems, while ensuring critical and high-priority patches are kept up-to-date on all servers.
  • Generate and monitor Infrastructure Operations processes
  • Provide system administration support for Contingency Plan to ensure it is ready to implement whenever necessary.
  • Collaborate with the NHGRI ISSO as needed to assess and maintain the security of all NHGRI IT environments.
  • Research, plan, test, and execute migration of IT environments to other hosting environments or cloud providers.
  • Perform impact and requirements analysis for and implement new technologies in accordance with the Institute’s policies and procedures, including Cloud computing, Hierarchical storage management (HSM) systems, or other information life cycle management (ILM) solutions, enhanced Storage Reporting and Archiving systems; system-level configuration management software; and system and security monitoring tools

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business (or equivalent) and a minimum of eight years experience
  • Minimum of five years experience leading/managing a datacenter/infrastructure team
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in IT Infrastructure environment (i.e. Unix/Linux, RedHat Enterprise, Windows, Storage/Backups, Networks, VMware/Citrix) and Data Centers.
  • Data Center Energy Practitioner (DECP) Generalist certification
