Senior Cloud Engineer

GDIT has an opportunity for a growth oriented and execution-focused professional to help drive our Department of Homeland Security business area serving various DHS agencies.

Candidate must be an US citizen, and able to obtain DHS Public Trust clearance and USCIS EOD to start work


We are looking for a talented and experienced Senior Cloud Engineer to join our Hosting Services team on our Enterprise Infrastructure Operations and Support Services (EIOSS) program supporting DHS USCIS. The candidate will provide infrastructure/cloud  and datacenter operation services for large enterprise focusing on the data operations solutions (DHS Data Centers, Cloud, Hybrid). Candidate will working with the EIOSS Hosting Team and USCIS IT operations customers responsible for engineering and operations of the agency’s cloud infrastructure efforts.

This position works under the general guidance of program manager, hosting services task lead and USCIS EID leadership, in an Agile, DevSecOps fast-paced, rapidly changing, collaborative environment. The task lead must possess strong leadership and excellent communication (written and verbal) skills. Shall have proven troubleshooting and analytical skills, strong critical thinking, complex problem solving, appropriate judgment, and decision-making skills.


  • Provide infrastructure requirements for all environments and details for the installation of hardware in the field and in data centers
  • Conduct a technical review on the Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM). After ROM is complete, the contractor is responsible for the buildout of the system or application in the on-premise environment
  • Work closely with the Engineering, Network and Development teams to establish detailed and documented information required for systems and application integration into production environment and for the acceptance for ongoing O&M.
  • Capture the “As-Built”, Version Description document (VDD) or Runbook documentation authored by the hosting teams (Detailed information will be provided by USCIS EIDOCS) and develop relevant artifacts needed for IT operations
  • Provide AWS and Azure cloud support, technical guidance, monitor activities, coordinate work between various teams, and manage all Hosting work in cloud environment
  • Keep the O&M Kanban board or current tool updated to optimize the flow of all work performed.
  • Provide regular cloud Infrastructure health checks consulting the operations teams
  • Guide and help the IT hosting operations area task leads in planning. Guide the work of junior technical staff
  • Work with program and technical staff in all aspects of daily work
  • Fully engage, lead, direct and guide the Operations teams in the implementation of a DevSecOps practices and automation of repeated tasks for supporting IT
  • Support information assurance process in a technical role by complying with technical controls, technical checklists etc.,
  • Assist and mentor junior members on the team

Required Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • 8+ years of architecture, analysis related to design, development, and integration of hardware and software to support large scale on-prem, cloud and hybrid environments with virtualization
  • 8+ years’ experience performing a variety of engineering designs on operational IT environments in Windows Physical, Cloud and virtualization software environments such as VMware’s vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V on a set of enterprise-level IT systems
  • 8+ years’ experience performing a variety of engineering and operational related assignments associated in Unix/Linux in Physical, Cloud and virtualization software environments
  • 5 + years’ knowledge and experience of scripting language such as PowerShell, with knowledge of ANSIBLE, and Middleware (Oracle Application Server, IIS, Apache and other web and application servers)
  • 4+ years of experience using Chef Suite, Ansible Tower, Jenkins, Git, Sonatype, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, RedHat Openshift, AWS EKS, Apigee (API Management), SCCM, Twistlock, Forman are needed
  • Working experience and knowledge of Python, Terraform / Cloud Formation Templates, JSON/YAML, AWS Lambda (serverless computing) will be given preference
  • 4+ Working experience with AWS, AZURE, Google Cloud Services, and other Cloud environments
  • 4+ Working knowledge and Experience with Agile, DevSecOps practices and ITIL processes and their application with enterprise-level IT systems and their operations

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Cloud and other professional certifications
  • Experience with any DHS agencies or entities

The position is based in GDIT’s Falls Church, Virginia headquarters, with expected travel to current program locations and new business opportunities across the country. Travel is primarily local travel in the DC metro area for the current portfolio but could potentially expand to both national and overseas locations as the portfolio grows.
