The Senior Communication Specialist provides internal communications and external affairs support for a government agency, including development and maintenance of outreach materials, backgrounders, and the web site, creation and dissemination of weekly reports, and support of SharePoint projects.  

As part of a team, the communications specialist will also develop and coordinate strategic messaging, including social media and internal and external communications strategies.

Duties include:

Internal Communications

  • Develop, implement and coordinate an internal communications strategy to keep staff informed of program updates and information

  • Develop and disseminate weekly reports: collect information from division directors, edit and synthesize all submissions, and electronically distribute to staff

  • Manage and maintain outreach packages for staff use, including power point slides and talking point templates; 

  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of Fact Sheets

  • Lead programmatic support to SharePoint sites, with focus on using the system to strengthen internal communications and share information

External Affairs

  • Assist in the drafting and distribution of newsletters

  • With the communications team, maintain the sections of the web site; serve as the point of contact for division web site changes and edits

  • With the communications team develop strategies for the collection, management, and use of success stories

  • Serve as primary point of contact for public inquiries and referrals that come into the Office of the Director for questions related to eligibility, services, etc.

  • Write communications as requested by federal staff including condolence letters, thank you letters, commemoration letters, etc.

  • Participate in external event planning teams

This position is based in Washington, DC and requires a Public Trust clearance (or the ability to obtain one)

Education

Requires BS/BA degree in communications, development, social work, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience

Requires 5-8 years of relevant experience

Experience with social media platforms and web/social media content development

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Strong analytical and research skills
