Our work depends on a Bioinformatics Project Lead joining our team to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at its headquarters in Atlanta, GA.

At GDIT, we put our people first. As our Bioinformatics Project lead, you will be trusted to work with a team of developers and fellow bioinformaticians on bioinformatics workflows for comparative genomics, Next Generation Sequence analysis, and analysis workflow development.   In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to identify requirements
  • Providing team and project leadership to a small team of bioinformaticians and data scientists
  • Manage resources and schedules to ensure on time project executions.
  • Supporting NGS analysis including assembly, functional annotation, and analysis of viral genomes, bacterial genomes, fungal genomes, protist genomes, eukaryotic genomes, vector species, complex transcriptomes, and metagenomes.
  • Building and supporting genomic analysis workflows/pipelines for sequence analysis of different sample types.
  • Your success will be measured through project-based deliverables associated with software and tools as directed by out client.

The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled professional with broad experience in bioinformatics, including comparative genomics, Next Generation Sequence analysis, and analysis workflow development.  The position requires end-to-end complete life cycle experience in analysis and workflow/pipeline development for genomic data analysis, including analysis of sequencing information for Illumina, IonTorrent, and Oxford sequencing platforms. The candidate should have demonstrated competency in translating genomic data into meaningful biological insights using contemporary methods including variant analysis, comparative genomics, phylogenetic methods, and integration with other information types.  This position will require the candidate to contribute in both technical and project leadership capacities for a small team providing bioinformatics and data science support

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • BA/BS and 5+ years of relevant experience OR a Masters or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or Computational Biology or other relevant discipline and 3+ years of applicable experience
  • Broad experience with NGS data analysis for Illumina, Ion Torrent, and Oxford platforms
  • Broad experience with bioinformatics tools and ability to integrate those into robust analysis pipelines and workflows
  • Demonstrated fluency in UNIX/Linux and high-performance computing environments
  • Demonstrated programming/scripting ability in languages such as Perl/Python/Java/C++
  • Strong in statistical/mathematical packages such as R/MATLAB
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast paced environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred qualifications : 

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or Computational Biology or other relevant discipline preferred.
  • Experience managing a small team
  • Familiarity with tools such as CLC Genomics Workbench or Geneious
  • Experience with evolutionary biology, population genetics, and phylogenetics
  • Experience building application on or migrating applications to commercial cloud providers
