GDIT's Military Health Team is hiring an Editor in Chief to support the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR) for the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD) based out of Falls Church, VA. Expectation is to work 1-2 days in the office, so the ideal candidate should be local to the DMV area.
The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD) is the central epidemiologic resource for the U.S. Armed Forces, conducting medical surveillance to protect those who serve our nation in uniform and allies who are critical to our national security interests.
AFHSD critical functions are as follows:
Acquire, analyze, interpret, disseminate information, and recommend evidence-based policy
Develop, refine, and improve standardized health surveillance methods
Serve as the focal point for sharing health surveillance products expertise and information
Coordinate a global program of military-relevant infectious disease surveillance
The Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR), in continuous publication since April of 1995, is the AFHSD’s flagship publication. The mission of the MSMR is to provide its readers with unbiased, scientifically rigorous, evidence-based information regarding the status, trends, and factors impacting the physical and mental health of U.S. military members. The objectives of the MSMR are to provide and disseminate medical surveillance information necessary to inform, motivate, and empower commanders, their surgeons, and medical staffs to design, implement, and resource programs that enhance health, fitness, and readiness for servicemembers.

The Editor in Chief of the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR) provides support to the Epidemiology and Analysis section (E&A) of the AFHSD in the production of the MSMR. In providing such support, the Editor in Chief collaborates and consults with the other full-time MSMR editorial staff in maximizing their contributions to each issue of the MSMR. The Editor in Chief leads the other staff in evaluating all content (e.g., photographs, manuscripts, tables, figures, graphs) and makes decisions on appropriateness for publication in the MSMR. The Editor in Chief also performs substantive reviews and provides editorial feedback on all MSMR submissions. The Editor in Chief may also engage in the development and/or design of analyses for AFHSD-generated MSMR manuscripts and in translating data analysis results into understandable and actionable information disseminated via the MSMR.
What You'll Be Doing:
Reviews and provides editorial feedback on all MSMR submissions spanning a wide variety of military-related health surveillance reports.
Identifies topics of interest for MSMR manuscripts and special issues.
Serves as a subject matter expert and provides consultative support on military public health and preventive medicine topics to AFHSD and DHA staff.
Contributes to the development and review of AFHSD standardized health surveillance case definitions using administrative medical data.
Provides support during the AFHSD rotation for preventive medicine residents from USUHS which includes attendance at preliminary and final presentation of rotation data projects and provision of feedback to the residents.
Serves as the lead facilitator for a bi-weekly “Epi Chiefs” teleconference call which provides global situational awareness of potential health threats to the U.S. military.
Ensures timely completion of analyses, summaries, and reports produced by the MSMR staff.
Ensures data quality of reports, analyses, and products produced and published in the MSMR are of highest quality and accuracy through multi-tiered review of in-house and externally submitted manuscripts.
Preparation of ad hoc briefings, white papers, summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations on health surveillance.
What You'll Need:
MD or DO with a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) or MS in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health or similar.
5+ years of experience interpreting health analysis, including study design, data analysis, and results interpretation.
5+ years of experience critically evaluating written reports on infectious disease, preventive medicine, occupational medicine and other health topics that are pertinent in health surveillance analysis and reporting.
Familiarity with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines.
Experience working with other staff (contract and Government) in the formulation and standardization of medical case definitions and methodology for health surveillance reports derived from administrative medical data. This requires knowledge and understanding of ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes, CPT codes, etc.
Competence, skill, and accomplishments in written communication in English as evidenced by the next two qualifications.
Demonstrated publication record in peer reviewed medical journals.
Experience editing scientific and/ or medical manuscripts.
US citizenship (based on customer requirements) and the ability to obtain a favorable T3 security clearance.
What Would Be Even Better:
Preventive Medicine Physician, preferred
Prior experience using Military Health System (MHS) data or VA data, preferred.
Prior military experience, preferred.
