Sr. Web Administrator/Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a Sr. Web Administrator to join our team to support the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Rockville, MD. As a Sr. Web Administrator. This position is part of the Enterprise Hosting team in the Operations and Engineering Branch, which focuses on deploying and maintaining various infrastructure services to support scientific research.

You will work closely with six other innovative and savvy people to engineer and expand the Application Hosting with new tools and technologies.  You’ll help automate and streamline our operations and processes, and further the adoption of DevOps best practices. We’ll want your opinion on operational processes, DevOps, deployment checklists, and more.  (A focus on always-up, always-available application is a plus.)

In this role, a typical day will include:

The primary duties of the Senior Web Administrator are to manage our customers application hosting environment in on-premise datacenters and in the cloud as listed below.

• Configure and support the day-to-day application management tasks such as troubleshooting issues, deploying changes, installing and configuring new custom and third-party applications, remediating application security vulnerabilities, and optimizing performance settings
• Monitor the health of applications and respond to alerts such as services down, failed backup, slow response time, or no free space available on file systems
• Work closely with application owners and software engineers to identify requirements, plan, and implement projects such as installing new custom applications with web services, database components, dataset hosting, and load balancing.  
• Automate day-to-day processes and create self-service capabilities to empower software developers and application owners to perform routine maintenance tasks such as renewing TLS certificates, changing service account passwords, and rebooting application servers
• Research and recommend innovative approaches for application hosting to modernize our customers hosting environment and speed up time to deliver
• Document day-to-day administrative processes and configuration information about our customers applications

After hours and weekend work may occasionally be required for pre-planned maintenance or troubleshooting for service-impacting outages.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• BA/BS or equivalent and eight years related experience or a MS and six years’ experience
• Minimum of three years’ hands-on experience in Web Application Hosting 
• Expert knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x & 7.x
• Experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting LAMP stack applications
• Experience in managing hardware load balanced applications
• Experience in administering TLS certificates for web servers (creating, applying, troubleshooting) such as Tomcat, Apache, nginx, or equivalent
• Experience with commonly used services such as AWS EC2, S3, Route 53, and RDS.
• Experience with Drupal 7.x & 8.x on Red Hat Enterprise Linux
• Experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting MySQL, Postgres, and Aurora RDS
• Experience with infrastructure as code and automation/configuration management using either Cloud Formation or Terraform to define infrastructure standards for cloud services.
• Strong scripting experience (Python, Bash, Java, Ruby, Terraform/HCL or equivalent)
• Experience analyzing solutions components, understanding systems integration challenges, and identifying technology gaps in current components that must be resolved to reach future performance targets and functionality requirements in cloud infrastructure. 
• Must be able to obtain a NIH Public Trust

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Able to clearly present ideas to both technical and non-technical users and staff to further the adoption of DevOps.
• Experience designing and implementing technologies following NIST standards, such as SP 800-53, SP 800-190, and SP 500-291. 
• Experience with PHP, Java, R, LDAP, SimpleSAML, Moodle, Tomcat, or JBOSS
• Experience with configuration management systems such as Puppet, Chef, or Ansible
• Knowledge of layer 3 networking technologies, switching, and routing
• Experience configuring CI/CD pipelines using GoCD, Jenkins, or equivalent
• Experience breaking down monolithic applications into microservices and Docker containers
• Knowledge of switching, routing and enterprise storage
• RHEL Certifications
• AWS Certifications
