GDITs Military Health team is seeking an Animal Research Tech/Drug Discovery (Drug Formulation Scientist) to support the mission of the Experimental Therapeutics (ET) Branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The mission of the WRAIR Branch of Experimental Therapeutics is to discover and develop new therapeutic agents to protect military members from death, disease, and injury. The Branch is the nation’s primary developer of new drugs to prevent and/or treat malaria and leishmaniasis. Collectively, ET engages in drug discovery, drug efficacy and mechanism evaluation, and formal preclinical and clinical development.


  • Serve as Research Associate for the in vivo laboratories in the Department of Drug Discovery and shall maintain a safe working environment and adhere to applicable safety regulations.
  • Support the Department of Discovery leadership and ensure achievement of assigned project goals in a timely manner and within budget, as needed by the Department of Drug Discovery.
  • Assist the in vivo Laboratory Manager in the preparation of supply orders for the in vivo laboratories for approval by the Department Chief or COR, as applicable.
  • Ensure all equipment within the in vivo laboratories are maintained and serviced as required and assist in the preparation of relevant equipment purchase documents.
  • Maintain a chemical and sample inventory and a lab SDS folder in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Develop, optimize, validate, and perform in vivo models in various animal species (to include but not limited to mice, hamsters, and non-human primates) for various therapeutic areas (to include but not limited to malaria, leishmanial, and drug-resistant bacteria) as needed by the Department of Drug Discovery.
  • Prepare or assist with the preparation of validation packets for the in vivo models as needed by the Department of Drug Discovery.
  • Oversee animal procurement and scheduling within the Animal Management System and applicable Departmental testing schedules.
  • Generate detailed experimental protocols and contribute to IACUC animal protocols for the in vivo models as needed.
  • Assist in the generation of detailed experimental protocols for the in vivo models as needed.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a database to record all results from the in vivo model and upload the data into the Experimental Therapeutics Branch LIMS.
  • Assist in the analysis and summary of experimental data for reports, presentations, posters, and publications.
  • Attend and present at relevant national scientific conferences, if required by Department of Discovery.
  • Formulate and administer drugs using different routes of administration, such as inter-peritoneal (IP), orally (PO), intravenous (IV), and intra-muscularly (IM) as needed.
  • Attend training for ALAC accreditation as an animal handler
  • Attend training required to participate on IACUC animal protocols for the in vivo models as needed.


  • BS in scientific field
  • 3+ years of laboratory experience is required
  • Must have experience with drug formulation
  • Must have experience supporting pre-clinical drug discovery efforts
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a favorable Public Trust security investigation prior to start date.
