Our work depends on an Infectious Disease Portfolio Manager/Epidemiologist joining our team to support the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division (AFHSD) (formerly the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch - AFHSB) activities in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Pursuant to a customer requirement, this position is contingent on providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination or submitting to regular COVID-19 testing at your own expense.  Must be able to meet customer facility COVID requirements.

In this role, a typical day could include the following tasks:

  • Provide support to government staff through portfolio management, including: annual proposal review, quarterly scientific evaluation and budget tracking, and monthly data reporting collation and dissemination
  • Provide programmatic support to the Global Emerging Infection Surveillance (GEIS) Program Office through project monitoring and evaluation, and epidemiological analysis of program-level infectious disease surveillance data with a focus on generating actionable data for improving force health protection
  • Serve as the point of contact for Principal Investigators with GEIS-funded activities, including: requesting reports, providing feedback on proposals and reports, coordinating annual proposal submissions and assisting with coordination of multi-site surveillance activities
  • Compile, monitor, interpret, and summarize surveillance information and data for the purpose of supporting the data-to-decision initiative and to inform relevant stakeholders, specifically the Geographic Combatant Commands
  • Provide technical input for epidemiology and infectious disease surveillance in one or more focus areas, including: antimicrobial resistant infections and sexually transmitted infections, enteric infections, febrile and vector-borne infections, and respiratory infections
  • Develop and disseminate the results of surveillance summaries and partner resources via reports, briefings, presentations, manuscripts, websites, and other mediums based on target audiences and the guidance of senior team members
  • Assist with evaluation of GEIS surveillance network activities, including occasional site visits to DoD partner laboratories and national/international professional conferences


  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health or related field
  • Experience in portfolio and/or project management
  • 2+ years experience in infectious disease surveillance, detection, prevention, and/or response
  • Experience in summarizing and reporting information to support public health decision-making
  • Willingness to travel and perform job duties overseas
  • US Citizenship
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret clearance


  • Awareness of DoD and USG work in these areas
  • Experience in statistical analysis software packages, such as SAS, R, or Tableau
  • Familiarity with the Military Health System (MHS) and DHA
  • Laboratory and/or experience with applied infectious disease surveillance
  • Active Secret clearance
