We are seeking a Web Designer/Developer. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional who can bring new innovative ideas to the table and build upon the existing framework. This person will work closely with our customer at the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit (WRBU). The Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit (WRBU) is a unique national resource for biosystematics research on medically important arthropods, and serves to maintain the U.S. mosquito collection, housed within the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (SI-NMNH). The purpose of the WRBU is to conduct laboratory and field biosurveillance research on the systematics of medically important arthropod species and species groups in support of epidemiological studies and disease control strategies of importance to the military. The WRBU is focused on providing identification services and developing identification and vector risk assessment tools that support vector-borne disease mitigation efforts worldwide. Products and services are targeted to support ongoing or potential DoD missions, while fostering the interagency relationship between the WRAIR and SI-NMNH.
The general objective of this position is to provide generation and dissemination of taxonomic tools and products through apps and web-based portals (web support services for www.wrbu.org, on-line taxonomic catalog, literature sources & species pages; taxonomic keys, photographic illustration, unit branding). The website designer/developer will provide dedicated website development, upgrade and maintenance support for the WRBU web pages and services required to enable both partner and public access to WRBU- created taxonomic tools and products, as well as to support and manage the WRBU vector identification service for DoD partners. Expected results include an integrated relational back-end database linking the vector catalogs, identification (LUCID) keys, and distribution (VectorMAP) products on a secure, up-to-date web platform, as well as improved user search functions and outputs on the front end.
Responsibilities and Duties:
In concert with the SI Office of Computer and Information Operations, shall provide WRBU day-to-day website maintenance and support to include front-end management, online identification tools development and management, maintenance of a literature database, and management of online tutorial tools
Provide support for the development of up-dated online educational tools for vector specimen collection, processing, identification, and data management, as driven by customer need. The contractor shall assist in the creation of content, branding and design of webpages and other WRBU outward facing products including flyers, business cards and WRBU promotional material
Coordinate front-end website design process, including wireframes, design mockups, style sheets, graphics, photos, flash animations and banners for the WRBU website to ensure proper display of all content, including that of a scientific and technical nature.
Analyze website traffic and user experience data using Google Analytics and other tools to make recommendations about website usability and design.
Design and develop email marketing templates for public email subscription services through MailChimp.
Ensure website design and imagery meet search engine optimization (SEO) standards and best practices.
Discuss scientific and technical concepts with WRBU research staff to coordinate design and development of science-based websites.
Ensure compliance with standards by adhering to government information security and privacy regulations.
Provide documentation as required and participate in code reviews, planning sessions, and routine status meetings.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Web Development, or a related discipline (or equivalent) and five years of related experience.
Minimum of four years of experience in designing and developing web sites.
Experience in converting comprehensive layout and wireframes into functional pages.
Knowledge of User Experience (UX), Web design usability principles, and Section 508 accessibility requirements.
Experience configuring, maintaining, and using content management systems.
Experience working with Adobe XD or Sketch, Adobe Photoshop, and other design tools.
Experience working with Cloud/Amazon Web Services, Windows Server and/or Linux servers.
Experience working with databases.
Experience developing mobile-friendly websites using frameworks, such as Bootstrap and Foundation.
