Scientist Advisor- COVID/FLU exp

GDIT is supporting CDC in Atlanta, GA involving cutting edge research and development efforts specifically in influenza and SARS-CoV-2 surveillance by increasing the diagnostic and immunization tools available to clinical providers, public health laboratories and domestic and international partners.

This exciting opportunity is for a Scientist Advisor providing genomic analysis support to improve the vaccine virus selection for SAR-CoV-2.  Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 integrated with classic epidemiology facilitates the detection of new epidemic variants and provides complete and accurate information about viruses posing a pandemic threat. The use of genomic epidemiology will improve candidate viruses for pre-pandemic and pandemic vaccine development to assist decision makers in formulating management strategies needed during outbreaks, epidemics, or pandemics.

As a senior scientific staff member, you will be expected:

• Leverage subject matter expertise to identify new and enhance existing methods of study from conceptualization through development and delivery of fully validated methods for pathogen identification, characterization, and propagation used in infectious disease diagnosis and surveillance.
• You will collaborate with bioinformaticians on a variety of viral evolution studies related to SARS-CoV-2 viruses.
• Prepare reports, summaries, presentations, papers and other documents to highlight findings, accomplishments, and surveillance data. 
• Participate in special projects and activities and assume responsibilities as assigned.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in methods and processes.  Stay up to date with current and emerging scientific trends relevant to your job functions
• Advise clients on relevant advancements that may benefit their objections.  Work in a fast paced and dynamic environment while able to manage multiple and sometimes competing priorities.

Required Skills

• MS degree and 8 yrs experience in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, virology, bioinformatics, immunology or related discipline (or equivalent in education and experience).
• Ability to conduct genomic epidemiologic studies on the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 viruses to detect and assess the risk of new emerging variants to current vaccines.
• Experience in analyzing next generation sequence data from routine and enhanced global surveillance using spatiotemporal, phylodynamic and epidemiologic approaches to determine trends that can be used in making predictive decisions about prevention, treatment and control prevention, treatment and of influenza/SARS-CoV-2 epidemics or pandemics.
• Experience with the use of mathematical and computational approaches to understand, and eventually predict the evolutionary and epidemiological patterns of SARS-CoV-2 viruses.
• Familiarity with the appropriate genomic analysis methods, procedures, techniques, and applicable quality controls

Preferred Skills

• PhD Degree and 2+ years of experience in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, virology, immunology or related discipline and 3+ years of work experience (or equivalent in education and experience).
• Track record of scientific publication on topics related to diagnostics and surveillance of infectious diseases
• Experience in planning, preparing materials, coordinating and performing genomic epidemiologic training workshops.
• Working knowledge of laboratory and safety regulations including CLIA, ISO, and/or OSHA standards
