GDIT, is seeking a Data Archive Specialist to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAAs) National Centers for Environmental Information This position is for a team member supporting the archival data stewardship activities in the NCEI Archive Branch. The team member will work on a variety of projects to archive and document environmental data following NOAA procedural directives and Federal data standards. This position:
  • Is suited for an experienced professional capable of working with team members and stakeholders in various geographical locations.
  • Requires attention to detail and following established processes to plan and manage data archive projects.
  • Involves negotiating technical agreements with stakeholders for submitting data to NCEI for long-term preservation.
  • Requires using technical tools to process and manage metadata.
  • Requires the ability to translate and communicate project requirements to developers and operators.
  • Requires a professional degree in library or information science, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics or a similar field.
Required Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skilled at collaborating with multiple teams and partners in remote settings.
  • Understanding of records and information management.
  • Skilled at metadata writing and management.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards, especially for environmental data.
  • Knowledge of data citation principles.
  • Ability to implement project management principles and ability to work on own initiative.
  • Understanding of data management and data curation processes.
  • Experience with file transfer protocols.
  • Experience with scientific data and documentation file formats, such as NetCDF, HDF, TIFF, and PDF/A. As well as generic data file formats like CSV, XML and JSON.
  • Experience using Windows OS and Google Workspace.
Preferred Skills
  • Familiarity with scientific concepts in meteorology, climatology, geophysics and/or oceanography.
  • Understanding of relevant archive frameworks such as the OAIS-RM.
  • Familiarity with applying version control with tools such as Git in a team environment.
  • Experience with Agile Methodology and the use of Jira.
  • Basic programming experience with XML/XSLT, Linux Shell, and/or Python scripting.
