Desktop Engineer

GDIT is looking for a Desktop Engineer with expert knowledge and experience implementing and administering enterprise-level desktop systems. The position is in support of GDIT’s contract with the Administrative Office of United States Courts – Administrative Office Technology Office (AOUSC-AOTO) in San Antonio, Texas.  

Responsibilities:  

The successful candidate will work with systems, applications, and solutions for AOTO’s enterprise-wide desktop systems. This is a hands-on role that requires deep technical knowledge of systems, networks, and applications along with a solid understanding of enterprise-level frameworks, policies, processes, and standards. The position requires strong critical thinking and analytical skills, attention to detail, and excellent oral and written communication skills. 

• Develop and maintain standards for design and deployment of Windows Desktop Images 
• Migrate existing Windows Desktop Images to standardized secure baselines
• Retire outdated endpoints and migrate end user profiles to newly provisioned devices  

• Update Operating System and standard COTS applications on established schedule 
• Work with systems engineers/administrators to facilitate remediation of tickets/alerts. 
• Assist in the coordination and completion of operations documentation (e.g. Work Instructions, SOPs) 
• Review deployment of existing systems and remediate to ensure alignment with standards where necessary  
• Ensure that deployments conform to approved design standards following documented SOPs and Work Instructions  

• Perform schedule checks of equipment; identify equipment showing significant wear and tear or other early indications of failure and proactively report issues  
• Provide escalation support for operational issues; opens service tickets with support contractors / repair providers and other service providers as needed. Tracks repairs until completion. 
• Compiles and submits regular monthly reports on operations and other work performed. 
• Proactively validate and remediate security vulnerabilities for production desktop/laptops  

• Create risk mitigation strategies when vulnerabilities cannot be remedied and work with IT security to review and act on any directed changes 
• Root cause analysis of problems causing service/system outage and development of correction action plan to mitigate reoccurrence of incidents. 
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:  

REQUIRED SKILLS: 

• At least 6 years progressive total IT experience, with 2-5 years of experience as a desktop engineer in an enterprise environment 
• Experience with Windows 10 desktop image building and patch management. 
• Understanding of encryption process using Windows BitLocker or WinMagic SecureDoc 
• Experience with online/in-place upgrades of Windows 10 desktops. 

• Experience with Anti-Virus applications, and enterprise deployment products such as Quest K1000 
• Experience with application packaging, scripted installs, and PowerShell 
• Experience with Dell and HP Laptops/Desktops, Teams Room Systems 
• Knowledge of the operating characteristics of various operating systems, e.g. Windows 10 Enterprise, MacOS and iOS. 
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 channels and upgrade cycles 

• Knowledge of Active Directory Domains and Group Policies and Virtual Desktops 
• Knowledge of upgrade processes for general desktop applications like Java, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Teams.  
• Knowledge of privilege management, ACLs, and file folder security permissions 
• Ability to perform remote troubleshooting and provide clear instructions. 
• Knowledge of general management and auditing techniques for identifying problems, gathering, and analyzing pertinent information, forming conclusions, developing solutions, and implementing plans consistent with management goals. 

• Excellent oral and written communications skills. Interaction and information gathering with coworkers and customers. 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS: 

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience 
• Industry leading certifications relating to desktop engineering and management with enough skills/experience to complement.
