GDITs Military Health Team is looking for a Sr Laboratory Manager to support the

Navy Health Research Center (NHRC).

As the Navy hub for the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, the NHRC Operational Infectious Diseases Directorate conducts on-going, laboratory-based surveillance of US military populations in unique environments to quantify and study the etiology of infectious illnesses. The Sr Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the day to day operations of both molecular and microbiology laboratories.


  • Responsible for providing consultative and administrative oversight to space management, personnel management, inventory management, and laboratory management.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate and present complex problems and solutions to section supervisors and the laboratory director.
  • Ability to ensure standardization, without disparity, within the sections and make certain the sections are following good clinical practices for the College of American Pathologists accreditation. 
  • Serves as the CLIA/CAP Technical and Clinical Consultant for the San Diego lab as well as satellite lab affiliates. Upholds all policies and procedures based on current and/or future accrediting organizations. 
  • Assists in the creation of validation/verification processes of new assays and ensures that accreditation requirements are met prior to implementation. Updates laboratory capabilities with new technologies as necessary and feasible.  
  • Maintains laboratory information system for all laboratory sections by identifying information needs and problems; recommending improvements; establishing priorities; testing; writing user manuals; training employees; maintaining security and confidentiality.
  • Ability to interface with investigators, vendors, research staff, and study participants.
  • Provides rapid assessment in cases of national emergency or infectious disease outbreaks, as they occur, and provide appropriate personnel and response task forces with information that can be used to develop effective short term and long term solutions.
  • Assists with maintaining Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) standards during performance of laboratory testing in accordance with GLP Regulations – 21 CFR Part 58 (FDA).
  • Provide operational support, to include analytical evaluations and prospective clinical evaluations, for diagnostic evaluations, clinical studies, and/or clinical trials sponsored by Federal Agencies or private companies, subject to final GS or military approval.
  • Support surveillance of operational infectious diseases that affect DoD personnel in coordination with federal agencies, local governments, research organizations, and universities at locations around the world.
  • Supports logistic and administrative tasks as needed to ensure that the department can successfully meet its mission, subject to final GS or military approval.

Management and Supervisory Duties:

  • Maintains and ensures productivity is monitored, identifying peak and slack periods, and making operational or staffing adjustments as necessary in both sections.
  • Works with the Program Manager to direct, coordinate, and conduct personnel actions and furnishes guidance and assistance as needed.
  • Mentors staff in two sections for professional development.
  • Works with scientific directors to assign special projects to staff members.
  • Responsible for helping to identify disease situations and to design proper laboratory support for these projects.  
  • Have firsthand knowledge of molecular techniques in identification, and characterization of microorganisms. 
  • Supervises and trains molecular personnel in procedures of testing, equipment, safety and quality control. 
  • Writes, reviews and updates standard operating procedures for assigned laboratory section.  
  • Responsible for assuring all results released are accurate and timely.

Other Job Duties:

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Creates abstracts and manuscripts and presents them at scientific conferences.  
  • Monitors quality assurance for assigned laboratory section.  
  • Performs computer data entry of lab results and other lab information.  
  • Oversees that maintenance on equipment is performed and completed.  
  • Monitors that an inventory of all laboratory supplies is maintained.  
  • Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed


  • Degree: MS (in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology or related field)
  • Experience: 4-6 years related experience
  • Required Licenses, Certification: ASCP - MLS, MLT or CLS
  • Must be a US Citizen and the ability to obtain a Secret clearance


  • Experience working in BSL3 facility preferred
  • Experience working in CAP-accredited lab preferred
