Job Description

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Payload Team provides on-board flight software development, maintenance, testing, and engineering support for normal operations, and spacecraft anomalies.  The team consists of the System Engineers and the Science Instrument (SI) and NASA Standard Spacecraft Computer-1 (NSSC-1) Flight Software (FSW) Engineers. In particular, the candidate would support the Payload FSW activities.

The Payload FSW engineer will perform software tasks in the following areas:

  • Participate as a member of the Payload team to develop and maintain flight software under the direction of the Payload team lead
  • Document and maintain flight software, test plans, and procedures
  • Validate software releases using ground test facilities and simulators
  • Support the maintenance of software tools
  • Adhere to software configuration and process procedures
  • Support flight software engineering and troubleshooting tests in the test facilities 
  • Support spacecraft anomaly investigations, develop corrective actions or workarounds, and provide timely response of analysis results
  • The job requires you to be on-call bi-weekly, 24/7 and be able to respond when needed which may include going on-site to work the problem. 

Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in an accredited and related software engineering or computer science field with at least 7 or more years’ experience. 
  • Experience with real-time embedded software programming, software standards, and testing is highly desired.
  • Experience with software deliveries and support documentation is required.
  • Proficient in C and Assembly programming language with a working knowledge of UNIX and VMS operating systems. 
  • Working knowledge of spacecraft flight and ground systems is desirable.
  • Candidate should demonstrate self-sufficiency, initiative, and reliability in a demanding operational software engineering environment, as well as excellent analytical, communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
