GDIT is seeking a Database Site Reliability Engineer to join our team to support the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Rockville, MD. As a Database Site Reliability Engineer, you will administer and enhance existing database service offerings to support critical business processes and ongoing scientific research.
You will work closely with three other innovative and savvy people to collaborate with product owners and engineer new database offerings using the latest technologies to improve delivery time and reduce operational maintenance. We’ll want you to think beyond just database services, and contribute to other areas of our hosting environment as we focus on continued modernization efforts. We’ll want to hear your opinion. You’ll help automate and streamline our operations and processes and further the adoption of DevOps best practices. (A focus on always-up, always-available services is a plus.)

This position is 100% remote now but will require onsite work in Rockville, MD when normal client operations resume.

In this role, a typical day will include:
Collaborating with product owners to develop new or modify existing Powershell scripts to automate consumption of database services such as installation and configuration of new database instances, patching and upgrades, or temporary assignment of SA permissions.
Troubleshooting service impacting issues, actively responding to alerts and performance trends, and responding to service requests, such as complicated product deployment efforts that require coordination to modify data and database hosting configurations.
Joining sprint or ad hoc meetings to discuss requirements for products and brainstorm new technical solutions. Then either collaboratively or independently, implement and design the solutions, such as a standard offering for hosting graph databases or a cloud migration strategy for database services following best practices.
Attending a daily stand-up meeting to report your accomplishments, plans for the day, and any roadblocks you encountered. Your team will do the same, giving you an opportunity to understand and contribute to other ongoing initiatives.
Working closely with other Site Reliability Engineers to enhance the experience for delivering infrastructure services and developing custom products by introducing techniques such as CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and containerized or serverless workloads.
Occasionally present to your team or our software developer colleagues, on DevOps best practices, new and interesting technologies, and ways you approached and solved challenging technical issues.
BA/BS or equivalent and eight years related experience or a MS and six years experience
5 years experience with all aspects of Database Administration – specifically Microsoft SQL Enterprise and Oracle.
Minimum of 2 years experience with AWS, specifically with relational database services.
Expert understanding of Powershell so that you are capable of writing new scripts and modifying existing scripts.
Experience with a variety of technologies to develop, maintain, and deploy infrastructure services, such as continuous deployment and continuous integration services, code repositories, and security vulnerability identification and protection. Example technologies include Azure DevOps Pipelines, Jenkins, GoCD, GitHub, Netsparker, AWS WAF, and Solarwinds.
Experience analyzing solutions components, understanding systems integration challenges, and identifying technology gaps in product designs that must be resolved to reach future performance targets and functionality requirements.
Experience with infrastructure as code and automation/configuration management using either Cloud Formation or Terraform to define infrastructure standards for cloud services.
Must be able to obtain a NIH Public Trust
Experience with relational and graphing databases, such as MySQL, PostgresQL, MongoDB, Neo4j.
Experience with other AWS service,s such as EC2, ECS, Cloud Formation, S3, and SMS Parameter Store
Experience with programming languages, such as PHP, Python, Perl, and/or Ruby
Able to clearly present ideas to both technical and non-technical users and staff to further the adoption of DevOps and cloud services.
Experience designing and implementing technologies following NIST standards, such as SP 800-53, SP 800-190, and SP 500-291.
