GDIT s military health team is HIRING a Training/ Research Veterinary to support the 59th Medical Wing (MDW), located at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

The 59th Medical Wing Science and Technology (ST) office advises and conducts clinical and translational research on matters pertaining to the medical aspects of the Air Expeditionary Force and the health of Air Force (AF) personnel and beneficiaries. In order to support the required research, ST offices conduct translational research in the areas of emergency medical care, combat casualty care, force health protection, restorative medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine and specialty centers.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Primary responsibility is to be the attending veterinarian for EMEDs field training course involving the use of live patient models. Also works in conjunction with Chief, Attending Veterinarian at the Clinical Investigations Facility overseeing training and research protocols.
  • Responsible for all aspects of animal care from delivery to training site through pre-operative prep, intubation, training scenarios, euthanasia and post mortem prep for medical waste.
  • Responsible to prepare the Live Patient Model (LPM) for operative procedures, remain and monitor the LPM throughout the entire training scenario. Ensures LPMs are properly euthanized at the completion of training.
  • Monitors airway and medical anesthesia during training, ensuring assigned personnel are meeting airway and anesthesia requirement of the LPM.
  • Once the training scenario begins, if students have difficulty with anesthesia or airway tasks/procedures or administering medications, the veterinarian will step in and assist the students to ensure the LPM’s needs are met.
  • Primary LPMs being utilized are swine, but may be subject to change.
  • Provides medical services in support of the healthcare of research and training animals to include but not limited to swine, sheep, goats, rats, mice and rabbits.
  • Prescribes medications, establishes and administers treatment plans, and performs surgeries on animals when required in accordance with approved protocols and local policy guidelines.
  • Evaluates and recommends animal care and use procedures for protocols to ensure compliance with veterinary standards and statutory requirements.
  • Trains research staff in humane methods of performing surgery and restraining animals.
  • Conducts training in proper use of anesthetics and analgesics.
  • Diagnoses and treats LPMs administering therapeutics, vaccinations and euthanasia agents.
  • Evaluates lab animals including nutritional requirements, environmental needs and disease risks.
  • Educates researchers and technicians in the differing needs of the various species used in research so that they may minimize any deviations from what the animals would typically experience under normal conditions.
  • Provides after-hours and weekend care as required. Incumbents will adhere to an 80 hour work schedule over a two-week period. Work schedules may be adjusted to meet mission requirements.
  • Completes continuing education training as required to maintain a current/up-to-date Veterinary License.

What You’ll Need (required):

  • The veterinarian should have experience in dealing with various swine breeds and understand the care and use of these breeds. Other species may be used and the veterinarian should be familiar with the care and use of breeds normally used in a training and research setting, These species include but are not limited to swine, sheep, goats, rats, mice, and rabbits.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from an Accredited College of Veterinary Medicine. Board Certification in Lab Animal Medicine preferred.
  • Must have a current Veterinary License to practice in the state of Texas.
  • Minimum of 5 years pf experience working with animals in a training and research setting.
