We are seeking a Sr. High Performance Computing Engineer to join our team to support National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) activities at the Hamilton, Montana, Rocky Mountain Laboratories campus. As a Senior High Performance Computing Engineer, you will be working with a 500+ core HPC cluster, implementing and supporting bioinformatics applications for a large research community, and creating scalable and optimal solutions.

In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Maintaining a 500+ core high performance compute cluster designed to support genomics, molecular dynamics, cryo-EM analysis, proteomics, phylogenetics, and deep learning research
  • Developing and implementing innovative and complex solutions, ensuring that upgrades and changes comply with established guidelines and processes
  • Monitoring and reporting on cluster performance, install and configure complex bioinformatics applications, and assist with the resolution of the most difficult system problems
  • Helping further develop and execute high performance computing solutions using cluster/grid technologies
  • Collaborating with researchers understanding their scientific pipelines, implementing efficient, technical solutions
  • Advising on HPC technology directions and investments and making technical presentations to other technical personnel and department leadership

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS or equivalent and 10 years related experience or a MS and eight years’ experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience with Linux/Unix variants, especially RedHat/RHEL and its derivatives
  • Experience supporting scientific applications and ability to compile, package, install, and upgrade software as well as troubleshooting application issues
  • Scripting experience in Python and other languages (e.g. bash, R, Perl, Ruby)
  • Automation/configuration management experience (e.g. Puppet, Ansible, Chef, Salt)
  • Experience with revision control tools, such as git/github, cvs, and svn.
  • Ability to clearly present ideas to both technical and non-technical users in formal and informal settings
  • Good decision-making skills and leadership ability to assist with management of project portfolio and daily operations for team
  • Experience managing HPC software with Spack, EasyBuild, Modules, or other common HPC tools
  • Must be able to obtain a NIH Public Trust

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of five years of experience supporting high performance clusters with Grid Engine (in any variant) or Slurm Workload Manager
  • Experience with assisting researchers with configuring job submission scripts 
  • Hands-on experience supporting IBM Spectrum Scale (formerly known as IBM GPFS)
  • Experience architecting and supporting InfiniBand networks
  • Experience running parallel jobs with OpenMP or MPI
  • Knowledge of GPU computation and CUDA
  • Experience supporting LDAP/IPA, NFS, Samba, Web servers
  • Versed in science and scientific software, life science tools, bioinformatics
  • Experience working and collaborating in an academic environment
  • Experience in customer collaborations involving scientific research supported by high performance computing infrastructure
