This position is located at the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).  The GIS Specialist will work with NCEI’s Center for Weather Climate (CWC) to provide GIS metadata support for a U.S. Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP)-funded project.  Additionally, this position will work with NCEI’s Data Stewardship Division (DSD) to provide a wide range of GIS support to NCEI’s diverse GIS projects. Location in MD, MS and NC.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support DOD/SERDP Project by creating a catalog of geospatial data collected and developed for select locations in the Pacific
  • Create and maintain Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata for multiple data sets/data layers
  • Consolidate metadata and data layers into a single package for delivery
  • Support dataset maintenance and development activities for upstream data sources
  • Contribute as a GIS specialist leading to a synergistic approach to NCEI’s GIS goals

Required skills:

  • Ability to work on U.S. Government Federal contracts in the USA
  • Experience with ESRI’s GIS Suite (i.e. ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro)
  • Experience creating and working with standards-compliant metadata
  • Experience managing complex scientific workflows
  • Experience producing compelling and easily interpretable visualizations of scientific data
  • Ability to plan activities and identify risks in an Agile or Waterfall environment
  • Ability to complete complex projects within prescribed timelines
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Preferred skills:

  • Experience in developing web apps within the ArcGIS Online platform
  • Experience developing mapping applications with ESRI’s JavaScript API
  • Familiarity with version control systems (preferably GIT)
  • Experience working on Unix/Linux platforms
  • Comfort with editing files from the command line with tools such as vim
  • Experience using open-source GIS and tools
  • Familiarity with a RDBMS (i.e. Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres)


Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Computer Science, Atmospheric Science, or related discipline, or Associate’s Degree and equivalent work experience
