GDIT is seeking a Phage Biologist in support of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) Bacterial Diseases Branch, in the Wound Infections Department (WID). The mission of this department is to defeat combat related wound infections and research efforts are focused delivering novel solutions as prophylactics and/or treatments for combating Multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections.Duties include, but not limited to:
  • Design and perform research on phage therapeutics for microbial pathogens of military relevance and animal testing (a minimum of five studies or as required).
  • Develop and recommend phage cocktails for the treatment of the ESKAPEE pathogens (Enterococcus species, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, and Escherichia coli) and approval by the team lead and department chief.
  • Provide technical expertise in bacteriophage biology and genetics, and the isolation, identification and manipulation of bacteriophages. Perform assays to include but not limited to genetic analysis PCR assays, plasmid profiles, biochemical and immunodiagnostic tests, mass spectrometry and organize and tabulate results of studies and prepare data summaries.
  • Provide expert-level investigation into novel methods of bacteriophage utility to mitigate infection.
  • Maintain department phage inventory and microbial pathogen strain repository and derivative sample inventories.
  • Draft grant proposals on phage therapeutics for submission and approval by the department chief and research steering committees.
  • Draft research protocols and grant proposals for scientific review and conduct the approved research.
  • Observe, instruct, and validate technician performance.
  • Keep accurate and complete records of research done in accordance with contract requirements to include modifications.
  • Submit reports and data summaries as requested and prepare research results for presentation and publication in the scientific literature.
  • Comply with occupational health and safety standards and other applicable regulations and guidelines which may include medical surveillance.
  • Attend and participate in seminars, scientific conferences, and meetings.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • MD or Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology, Phage biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or other related scientific field.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: phage biology, cocktail formulation and therapeutics development
