General Dynamics Information Technology – Federal Civilian Division is currently looking for a Graphic Designer to join our team in support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – Joint Information Center (JIC). The CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to lead the novel coronavirus (COVID19) response. The Joint Information Center (JIC) and the various Task Forces (TFs) supporting the response require a variety of health communication support to carry out critical functions to continue to support this response. This position is for fulltime employment and will be located onsite at the customer’s location in Atlanta, Georgia. (CDC’s domestic facilities are currently operating under “maximum telework” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is anticipated that this position will be 100% telework until CDC’s facilities begin to resume normal operations.)

CDC’s JIC is a 24/7 emergency communication unit that serves as the primary point of information coordination during a CDC Incident Management System (IMS) activation. The JIC is primarily staffed by a network of emergency communicators who ensure that accurate health protection information is quickly shared with multiple audiences through many channels during a public health emergency.

Primary Responsibilities:

The purpose of this position is to assist JIC and the various Tasks Forces in the creation of graphics, presentations, infographics and other visual communication products in support of CDC’s COVID-19 communication response efforts. Responsibilities include:

  • Create highly visual graphics appropriate for communication channels and mediums including print and electronic (i.e., web, social media, presentations). Materials may be for external and/or internal usage.
  • Create daily visual slides that summarize scientific updates for leadership briefings within the Agency.
  • Create visual information for briefings to communicate with the Executive Branch and for public viewing.
  • Work with SMEs to develop creative briefs and concepts and to translating technical and scientific subject matter into visual communication products such as but not limited to web pages, factsheets, social media or social media posts, PowerPoint slides and presentations, infographics, etc.
  • Develop infographics and other materials by assessing all data.
  • Provide consultation services with managing and ensuring the CDC brand and all other creative guidelines are adhered to and consistent in all communication materials.
  • Provide consultation services on creating videos, building and testing interactive graphics, and electronic tools and training as specified by CDC.
  • Create and optimize 508 compliant images, PDFs and materials for the web using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Acrobat).
  • Provide guidance on web design and layout of graphical fact sheets, newsletters, and communication materials.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Graphic Design or Web Design and 3+ years related experience.

Qualifications:

  • Understanding of basic risk communication principles (giving clear and simple communication during an emergency, providing actionable information)
  • Experience reviewing and producing graphical elements for health communication materials
  • Strong proofing skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with Federal plain language
  • Experience in working with social media and/or digital media channels
  • Ability to identify gaps in existing resources
  • Self-sufficient (needs little supervision)
  • Ability to be flexible and to periodically work after hours and/or on the weekend. May be required to do rotations for on-call during weekends and evenings, as well as holidays, and to rotate through different shifts to fulfill a 24-hour, 7-day week schedule, should the need arise
  • Sound interpersonal communication, telephone, email and business etiquette
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Experience in facilitating quick turn-around for complex graphics/layouts
  • Experience in assisting in the preparation of graphics and/or documents for public audiences
  • Experience in the use of MS Teams and Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Outlook)
  • Must be U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) clearance

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Previous CDC and or public health experience highly desirable
  • Previous experience in an emergency response setting highly desirable
  • Previous work on or managed large scale multi-media communication campaigns, with an emphasis on using social media strategies to reach priority audiences.
  • Experience applying risk communication principles to outbreak situations.
  • Superior multi-tasking and organization skills. Must manage multiple simultaneous projects and prioritize assignments and tasks accordingly, remaining flexible to changing priorities and new initiatives.
