GDIT is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join our team, which supports of the NEDSS (National Electronic Disease Surveillance System) project for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For this project, we develop, maintain, and support the NBS (NEDSS Base System), a web-based disease surveillance system used by public health jurisdictions to collect and analyze disease occurrence data, as well as to report this data to the CDC. Team members support key processes in the development and support of the NBS application using an Agile development process.

This is a technical role, focused on defining and implementing solutions in SQL Server 2012 or 2016. Ideal candidate will also have current expertise in the development of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) processes implemented with Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). This person will work on a complicated system with limited supervision, so excellent problem-solving skills are necessary.

The position is based out of the GDIT office in Atlanta, GA (Brookhaven), but work will mainly be performed remotely, so a candidate that is proactive and possesses strong time and task management skills is a must.


The right candidate will have experience in SQL database administration, including experience with general database design, writing and review of database scripts and stored procedures, creation, and maintenance of data dictionaries, and developing processes to build and maintain multiple database environments, as well as experience in developing, maintaining, and supporting large-scale ETL processes. The role requires a skilled individual that has current experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2012-2016 and SSIS. The candidate will be able to support ETL processes using SSIS and implement processes using ETL specifications or other requirements documents. The role also requires analyzing, enhancing, and modifying existing SSIS processes.

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Exhibiting competency in problem solving, data analysis, business rule validation, data integration, data quality, dependency analysis, and estimation and delivery of complex SQL Server solutions
  • Working closely with client stakeholders, architects, analysts, and SMEs to validate and/or elicit information requirements for database design and architecture
  • Analyzing source data to assist in preparing iterative design changes, database refactoring, and creating or modifying reference data
  • Maintaining baseline database backups for various product releases and ability to stand-up development and testing database instances on demand.
  • Evaluating of existing databases for performance bottlenecks to recommend solutions for improvement
  • Implementing proactive system performance monitoring tools and procedures
  • Creating and maintaining entity relationship diagrams, data dictionaries, and ability to create implementation scripts
  • Developing reports and database procedures to help resolve data quality issues
  • Effectively communicating SQL Server SSIS architecture and approaches



  • Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • 3+ years of current experience with development and implementation of Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) solutions
  • Understanding of data warehousing principles and concepts
  • Current experience with Microsoft SQL Server databases
  • Experience with optimization of SQL statements
  • Extensive experience with implementing procedures, functions, and complicated ETL processes
  • Experience in database design with the ability to progress from concept to implementation
  • Experience in writing and delivering implementation SQL with rollback and logging capabilities
  • Experience in the development of modular SSIS solutions which include the implementation of robust error handling, logging, archival, and other foundational capabilities
  • Experience with debugging and troubleshooting SSIS processes in production environments
  • Extensive experience with packaging and deployment of SSIS solutions


  • Experience working in an Agile development team
  • Experience with Agile development tools, such as Atlassian Jira and Confluence
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Experience in the public health domain
  • Knowledge and understanding of implementing webservices a plus
  • Excellent listening and interpersonal skills
