General Dynamics IT is seeking a DSD DAB Scientific Data Systems DevOps Engineer  to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAAs) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). This position participates in on-premises and AWS development activities supporting the Data Access Branch’s operations and development teams. Duties involve working with a variety of scientific data and metadata management systems to administer environmental data access services on-premises, as well as migrate these services to the AWS cloud. The position will:
  • Be suited for a motivated individual with early-to-mid level experience in cloud technologies and the environmental sciences.
  • Require configuration management of Java and Python web applications and microservices on-premises and in AWS.
  • Require designing and building robust AWS architectures using best practices in Infrastructure as Code and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery principles.
  • Require attention to detail and ability to establish new standard procedures.
Required Skills
  • Strong programming skills in one or more of the following languages: Python, Java, Javascript.
  • Experience with AWS development.
    • Container orchestration using AWS ECS or EKS.
    • CI/CD with CodeCommit, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, CodePipeline, or Jenkins.
    • IaC with CloudFormation, Terraform, the Cloud Development Kit, or Ansible.
    • ETL with AWS Lambda, Step Functions, SQS, Kinesis, Glue, Athena, or Apache NiFi.
    • Optimal storage format and tiering for S3, EFS, EBS, RDS, or NoSQL services.
  • Experience with REST API and microservices architecture.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Git VCS.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Jupyterhub and Jupyter notebooks is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with the OPeNDAP protocol and its use in THREDDS, ERDDAP, or Hyrax applications is a plus.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and dashboarding application performance using Elasticsearch and Kibana, Graylog and Grafana, or CloudWatch.
  • Environmental data analysis with Python, especially using Jupyter notebooks, NetCDF4, CFGRIB, Siphon, Pandas, Pyarrow, Xarray, Dask, and Zarr libraries.
