Created after 9-11-2001, the Department of Homeland Security consolidated numerous agencies data centers for central management. General Dynamics Information Technology plays a key role in the Departments IT integration strategy through its Data Center-1 program. GDITs DC-1 program is committed to delivering an efficient, responsive, and mature data center operation through excellence in service delivery, performance, and continual service improvement.

This position is to provide support for customer workload residing in a data center facility near GDIT’s Performance Circle office.  The candidate will be required to perform work within the data center facility as needed to support the customer and program.  This employee with work remotely or in the McLaren Road office supporting the Enterprise Service Desk when not at the data center.

Essential Job Functions:

Responsible for Data Center physical escorts to support customers, vendors, and the DC1 program.  Candidate will provide cabling and termination of Cat6 and Fiber. The position includes the testing and troubleshooting of wiring problems. Work with other Infrastructure team members to ensure completion of all cabling requests.

  • Responsible for installing, testing, and/or the connection of new copper and/or fiber cabling installs throughout the Data Center.
  • Responsible for physical asset inventory verifications and maintaining an accurate CMDB
  • Follow DC1 and DHS standard Change and Configuration management procedures
  • Position requires candidate to do a weekly physical inspection of the data center cages and more often visits as needed to support the program mission.
  • On-Site Smart hands support for the customer and program as needed.
  • Responsible for the testing and troubleshooting of cabling issues.
  • Will be required to perform all tasks associated with cable installation and/or removal
  • Excellent communication skills, clearly communicate with team members on project needs and brief Program management when required
  • Analyzes, logs, tracks and resolves software/hardware matters of significance pertaining to networking connectivity issues, printer, servers, and applications to meet business needs.
  • Performs troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common system problems; documents system events to ensure continuous functioning.
  • Recommends course of action and implements as approved. Upgrades system software and hardware components as required to meet business needs; coordinates backups.
  • Ensures upgrades are occurring in accordance with established parameters.
  • Coordinates the installation of client department specific applications and systems.
  • Determines appropriate method for installing applications and systems; resolves matters of significance and implements corrective course of action as needed.
  • Escort Customers, Vendors, and other contract staff within the Data Center facility.
  • Installs, tests, upgrades and configures system files and services to enhance performance.
  • Utilizes standard corporate tools to record change and problem activities for tracking purposes.
  • Monitor Atlas Dashboard for anomalies with infrastructure service delivery
  • Monitor customer dashboard for incoming chat request for customers seeking support.
  • Monitor service desk mailbox for incoming mail traffic and calendar events
  • Setup and coordinate Severity response collaboration between the DC1 Program and customers

Required Qualifications:

  • AA/AS (or equivalent experience), 5+ years of experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of TIA/EIA industry standards and BISCI guidelines
  • Physically able to stand or squat for long periods of time, climb ladders, lift over 40 pounds.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Visio and Outlook is a plus
  • Can clearly distinguish cabling color codes
  • Experience working with computer hardware for installation and upgrades
  • Experience working with software installation/upgrading procedures Experience working with file and system maintenance procedures
  • Good organization skills to balance and prioritize work
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot systems problems
  • Communication skills to communicate with support personnel, customers, and managers
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with Incident Response and Handling

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge in the use of Fluke DTX 1800 test equipment
  • Basic knowledge of OTDR test equipment
  • Security+, Network+, MCP, ITIL, and/or other relevant security/OS/network certifications
  • Upgrade system software and hardware components as required to meet business needs; coordinates backups
  • Experience with Department of Homeland Security (or other Federal agency) policies/procedures
  • Experience with monitoring/maintaining/securing network, operating systems, and applications
