At GDIT, people are our differentiator. We are seeking a talented and motivated Lead Engineer to support the Army National Guard's (ARNG's) National Capital Region Director of Information Management (NCR DOIM).  The NCR DOIM is responsible for the operation, maintenance, modernization, expansion, and further evolution of the IT services and infrastructure that support over 3,000 end users at the ARNG headquarters in Arlington, VA as well as other locations in the National Capital Region (NCR).  This includes supporting the ARNG NCR Campus Area Network (CAN), Local Area Network (LAN), server and storage infrastructure, end user devices and audio/visual equipment.  Major support requirements include network administration, service desk, network and IT engineering, audio and video services to include telephony, telecommunications management, asset management, equipment maintenance and disposition, cybersecurity, and Continuity of Operations (COOP). 

To be successful in this position you need to be collaborative and willing to work within a team. While you will need to be a self-starter, completing tasks on your own, working together is critical in this role. You will be interfacing with multiple teams, stakeholders and senior staff. Therefore, you should be articulate in your communications. You will need to explain technical intricacies to end users in a way that is easily understood. You will need to maintain a high-level customer service focus, exhibiting expertise, courtesy, timeliness, and professionalism.


The NCR DOIM uses ITIL best practices as a framework for a mature IT Service Management model.  As the Lead Engineer on the NCR DOIM team you will be the technical lead across the contract providing guidance, insight and engineering support for both Current Operations (CUOPS) and Future Operations (FUOPS).  The Engineering Lead shall be responsible for all technical design efforts related to implementing or improving ARNG NCR DOIM IT services and support.  Candidates should have experience in the following:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience with Microsoft Windows Server Management and Administration (patching, upgrading, configuring, hardening and troubleshooting).
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience working with server virtualization environment (VMware ESX/vSphere)
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience configuring and administering network switches at a Layer2 and Layer3 level.
  •  Experience with routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, IGRP, EIGRP)
  • Configuration of 802.1x authentication for Network Access Control (NAC)
  • Vlan administration and planning
  • IOS and IOS-XE upgrades
  • Security hardening (DISA STIGs)
  • Experience and thorough understanding of Active Directory management to include Group Policy Object (GPO) configuration and implementation.
  • Experience with network monitoring tool configuration and management (i.e. Solarwinds)
  • Experience with Network Access Control and Comply to Connect system implementation and integration.
  • Experience with Network Architecture Planning and Management, Integration and Implementation, Capacity Management and Network Performance Analysis
  • Experience with Storage Area Networks (SANs) and Fibre Channel (FC) network administration, configuration and optimization.
  • Experience and familiarity of DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) across multiple technologies (Windows, Network, ESX, VoIP, VTC).
  • Strong understanding of DOD and DISA security policies, postures and requirements.
  • Skill with both Microsoft Visio and Project for creating and maintaining network diagrams, system architecture drawing and project plans.
  • Experience with all aspects of project management including requirements gathering/analysis, design, resource management, implementation and transition.
  • Experience with development of Service Design Packages (SDPs).
  • Actively participate in all meetings such as, but not limited to weekly staff meetings, weekly training, network meetings, etc.
  • Experience engineering solutions that provide operational efficiencies and TCO improvements in a DOD environment.
  • Ability to analyze environments and recommend process and infrastructure improvements.
  • Actively participate in all meetings such as, but not limited to weekly staff meetings, weekly training, network meetings, etc.
  • Experience with leading a group of engineers and applying their skillsets and work cycles efficiently across multiple projects.

Additional Duties:

  • Guides the successful completion of major engineering programs may function in a project leadership role
  • Develops advanced solutions to a variety of highly complex engineering problems
  • Perform advanced systems design, development, and integration from the start of a systems life cycle to the end
  • Provides and applies advanced engineering to highly complex infrastructures including installing, configuring, testing, and maintaining operating systems, application software, and system management tools
  • Provides and applies advanced engineering skills to highly complex systems modeling, simulation, and analysis
  • Performs continual maintenance and provides advanced solutions for security, backup, and redundancy problems
  • Prepares and maintains documentation for processes and procedures related to engineering projects
  • Maintains current knowledge of rapidly changing technology, always on the lookout for new technologies, and works with management to evolve current processes
  • Performs complex systems development and design work that may include logic design, I/O design, model formulation, computer architecture analysis and design, and digital systems engineering
  • Invents innovative ways to drive production operational efficiency
  • Drives scalability and operability of supported systems/infrastructure
  • Provides system/equipment/specialized training and technical guidance
  • Coach and provide guidance to less-experienced professionals
  • Serve as a team or task lead

Clearance Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of a DoD Secret clearance on hire and confirmed. 

Certification Requirements:  

  • DOD 8570 IAT Level II or IAM Level II Certification (i.e CompTIA Security+ and Computing Environment)
  • ITIL Foundation Level Certification

 Work Location: 

  • Client Site, Arlington, VA
  • Monday-Friday normal business hours
  • No alternate work schedules
  • Requires 50% on-site support with 50% telework available.


  • Availability to travel, but less than 10%.  Most team members do not have to travel.
