GDIT, a leader in the background investigations (BI) industry, is seeking an experienced Background Investigator to support background investigations services for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). BIs are utilized to determine an individual’s suitability for employment with the federal government and eligibility to access classified information.
The investigations often involve personal and intimate details of an individual’s life and must be processed and conducted with tact and discretion. Information collected by the investigator is protected under the Privacy Act of 1974 and other regulations. In this position, you will conduct complex investigations that provide comprehensive coverage of basic suitability, eligibility, loyalty and overall security-related concerns for DHS, CBP and ICE.
These investigations cover specific information required to make suitability and eligibility decisions with respect to both applicants for employment and current employees.
Investigations involve individuals placed at all levels within the agency from initial appointment to members of the Senior Executive Service.
Investigations may result in disclosure of serious derogatory information that must be addressed prior to submission of the completed investigation to the government.
Investigations may include special interviews designed to elicit information regarding potentially derogatory or discrepant information. As such, a high degree of skill, tact, and discretion is required to ensure the protection of the subject's legal rights, while obtaining sufficient information necessary to properly evaluate the individual and at the same time protecting the identity of confidential sources.
Investigators must complete assignments within contractually mandated time constraints, while obtaining sufficient investigative coverage to fully develop the necessary facts required for the type of case being investigated, in accordance with the national investigative standards.
Investigators must prepare clearly worded reports of investigation that contain relevant information to demonstrate a competent investigation was conducted in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, rule, regulations and statutes. Reports must be grammatically correct and logically organized.
Ability to travel overnight away from the investigator's primary residence when required.
one year minimum experience conducting background investigations for OPM, DHS, CBP and/or ICE is preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; to balance and prioritize workloads, and understand and properly interpret policies and procedures regarding federal background investigations.
Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Business or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Currently hold or previously held OPM, CBP or ICE Background Investigator credentials.
