Join our team as a Cyber Security Lead / Information System Security Officer (ISSO) supporting the Unified Claims Acceleration Platform (UCAP). This high-impact solution accelerates the delivery of benefits to Veterans and their families. 

As part of the DigitalVBA modernization initiative, you’ll help transform the Veterans Benefits Administration into a secure, AI-enabled, cloud-first organization. In this role, you will lead security efforts across systems that process sensitive data at scale, ensuring continuous compliance with federal cybersecurity frameworks and regulations. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as the Information System Security Officer (ISSO) for federal systems within the UCAP environment. 

  • Manage the full Risk Management Framework (RMF) lifecycle and oversee Assessment & Authorization (A&A) activities. 

  • Develop and maintain security documentation, including SSP, POA&M, SAR, and Security Control Traceability Matrices. 

  • Implement and monitor compliance with NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP, FISMA, and agency-specific policies. 

  • Support and lead security audits, inspections, and incident response activities. 

  • Collaborate closely with DevSecOps, Cloud Engineering, and application teams to integrate security into infrastructure and development lifecycles. 

  • Serve as a liaison with Authorizing Officials (AOs), ISSMs, SCAs, and other federal security stakeholders. 

  • Mentor junior cybersecurity analysts and contribute to enterprise security strategy. 

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or related field. 

  • 8+ years of experience in information assurance or cybersecurity roles, with at least 3 years serving as an ISSO or security lead. 

  • Deep knowledge of NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP, FISMA, and related federal cybersecurity frameworks. 

  • Hands-on experience with RMF, vulnerability scanning tools (e.g., Nessus, Qualys), and SIEM platforms. 

  • Familiarity with cloud security (preferably AWS) and DevSecOps pipelines. 

  • Experience with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) A&A processes is strongly preferred

  • CISSP, CISM, or CAP certification preferred. 

  • Must be able to obtain a Position of Trust and successfully pass a thorough Government background screening process requiring the completion of detailed forms and fingerprinting

Salary and Benefit Information

The likely salary range for this position is $139,984 - $175,950. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
