The Quality Assurance (QA) Specialist provides technical assistance to a Division of Health at a federal agency. The Division oversees medical and public health services for underserved populations, working with a network of federally funded programs; medical, dental, and mental health providers; and federal, state, and local public health officials.   

The incumbent will work with a team of physicians and other clinical staff, epidemiologists, and quality assurance specialists. Primary duties include ensuring high data quality standards; assessing program compliance with medical exam, public health screening, and vaccination requirements; managing surveillance, clinical, and public health data; and provision of training and technical assistance to care provider grantees on aspects of the medical services program.

Duties

  • Routine medical quality assurance reporting through frequent program monitoring and collaboration with the agency’s Monitoring team.

  • Conduct trainings on basic public health or data entry topics for federally funded programs.

  • Monitor the team mailbox on a rotational basis; triage or respond to program inquiries about medical services and public health follow-up. 

  • Assist with data entry and data cleaning, as needed. In collaboration with federal staff, assists in further development of the agency’s medical services and public health program, including but not limited to development of health-related policy and guidance on health issues affecting minors.

  • Tracking and follow up of diseases of public health concern, ensuring continuity of care, and data collection.

  • Provide support to and acts as a liaison for federally funded grantees or federal staff for medical cases requiring specialized care.

  • In conjunction with care provider programs, troubleshoot issues related to reimbursement for medical services, provision of pharmacy benefits, and select specialized health care services, via direct interaction with Point Comfort Underwriters designated personnel and other health service officials.

  • Submit ongoing activity reports to which include significant accomplishments, issues, problems, special cases weekly review, and workload activity. Other activity reports or data for financial review or research purposes may be requested by the division, as necessary.

  • Work with field staff and headquarter staff to trouble shoot and resolve medically relevant issues with grantees.

  • Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge of health issues affecting the population and on an ongoing basis provides health-related information to care provider programs and federal staff and managers.

  • Participates in regular staff meetings, disease case review, conferences, and events, as required.

Ancillary Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and database administration support to federal staff.

  • Maintain and manage health surveillance data in multiple data systems including MS Excel, Access, and health surveillance system; Execute SQL queries and run simple reports in R.

  • Maintain data management materials and documentation, such as protocols, data dictionaries, and data collection forms.

  • Assist with other data retrieval and analyses, as needed. This may include data to develop evidence-based medical and public health policies and procedures, data to respond to requests for information, and data for financial review or research purposes.

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Public Health with 3-5 years of experience

Additional requirements:

  • Must have public health background and/or direct patient care experience. Must have the ability to analyze public health and medical services issues and recommend timely and effective solutions.

  • Must have experience in using MS Office (Excel and Access). Must be able to plan and organize her/his own workload.

  • Must have demonstrated experience in providing training or technical assistance on topics related to adolescent or childrens health issues and medical care.

  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of international pediatric health issues.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience with health care and mental health services in a residential setting is desirable.

  • Familiarity with epidemiologic principles and measures of disease and effect a plus.

  • Familiarity with SQL and R a plus.

  • Must be flexible and open to working weekends if required

  • This position is based in Washington, DC (Remote during COVID) and requires a Public Trust background investigation.
