This is a hands-on Senior UNIX Engineer position, addressing tasks to provide network operations support to the Infrastructure Operations Team. This position is responsible for managing the operational posture of the Enterprise server and interconnections to attached storage (NAS, SAN, and Flash Storage types) and supports incident, change and request cases submitted to the UNIX Team for resolution. Responsibilities require managing the functionality and efficiency of multiple computer operating systems (OS), primarily Linux and UNIX. Duties may include installing and configuring physical or virtual servers (on premise or cloud-based), setting up administrator and service accounts, tuning system performance, installing system wide software, validating and implementing critical system patches, and allocating mass storage space using manufacturer best practices and Enterprise Systems Management toolsets.
Supports proactive monitoring of components and systems, analyzes system faults and troubleshoots and runs diagnostic tests on operating systems and hardware to detect problems. Evaluates and installs software during various phases of testing. Reviews and prepares documentation for systems, tests, and software installation. Initiates preventive maintenance on the Oss, as well as repair to system/environment problems. Administers and/or oversees systems/environment solutions for multiple projects with varying schedules which are critical to the success of programs. Supports execution/maintenance of the program management plan. Strong task ownership, from identification through resolution and validation of Operational issues.
This role also serves as the Application Hosting team’s technical liaison to the application owners, middleware, network, and security teams with respect to web-based application integration support. In doing such, the position oversees the operation/maintenance and documentation of Apache webserver configurations, performs SSL certificate installations and renewals, and web server security hardening.
Provides architectural support and high level analysis for Linux/UNIX systems and components, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Solaris, and associated hypervisors.
Configure, patch, and monitor Linux/UNIX physical or virtual servers and troubleshoot problems.
Install, configure and maintain server operating systems and repair server hardware
Assists in developing recommendations for improvements and the development of technical standards
Conducts analysis, prepares reports, and works on project implementation.
Supports documentation maintenance such as operating manuals, SOPs, life cycle documentation, and manuals to support maintenance, and system administration for all systems for application deployment, configuration, and related processes.
Provides tier 2/3 support to investigate and resolve problems, inefficiencies, and performance issues which will require shift work or after hours call in to meet customer SLAs.
Maintains subject matter level expertise in Linux/UNIX server and virtualization technologies and systems administration, available to respond 7/24/365, as needed. Creates and updates SOPs for all aspects of server operations.
Designs solutions that maximize the sharing of applications, information, and resources.
Assists with procurement of hardware, software, and services.
Provides Apache webserver/website administration and integration support with application teams to ensure that the hosting platform can adequately and securely support the application configuration and workload.
Researches emerging technologies and makes recommendations based on future business needs.
Provides ongoing information to leadership, customers, and peers regarding health of the environment, enhancements, and innovations.
Executes use of tools, processes and reporting towards proactive monitoring of server performance across the Enterprise.
Supports implementation of approved changes to network systems hardware, system configuration, software, and infrastructure routing within the approved schedule. Implements measures for proactive monitoring and self-healing (high availability) capabilities to limit network outages IT infrastructure.
6+ years of experience providing technical support to Enterprise operations with 6 years of experience supporting physical and virtual Linux/UNIX-based enterprise servers.
Previous experience supporting and troubleshooting virtual servers, OS, and hosted application issues reported through monitoring or customer submittals.
Experience performing enterprise level project implementation and support with strong working knowledge of operating server and storage infrastructure, virtualization, cloud technology, knowledge of multiprocessing, threading, concurrency, distributed systems, load balancing, high availability, and COOP/DR.
Collaborating in a team atmosphere; communicating through various technology channels with teams and end customers locally or remote.
Experience supporting government customers in secure environments, familiarity of Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) operating standards and applicable guidelines.
Basic knowledge monitoring and management tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, HP OpenView, SolarWinds, or similar server tools.
Experience with ITIL methodology; specifically Incident, Request and Change management principles and tracking systems.
Ability to drive efficient resolution of all incidents through analytical and structured approaches to problem solving
Candidate must have a US “Public Trust” preferred, or other clearance
Bachelor’s Degree or Higher in Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline ITIL® Foundation Level Certification RHCSA/RHCE (version 6 or newer) Experience or significant exposure to some of the following technologies: SAN Storage and switching, Solaris Zones, Amazon Web Services Interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate effectively, self-awareness, and excellent written and oral communications. Experience with IT service management best practices such as change, problem, incident, configuration and service level management is strongly preferred. Experience in the development and refinement of processes and procedures to ensure efficient, repeatable and effective monitoring and troubleshooting of network and systems.
