GDIT’s Military Health team is seeking to fill an Environmental Health Specialist position which is located in the Preventive Medicine Directorate, Programs and Policy Support Department, Environmental Health Team, Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) Portsmouth, Virginia. The incumbent serves as an Environmental Health technical consultant to staff and customers of the NMCPHC in support of the department head.

As an Environmental Health technical consultant, will assist the department head and senior sanitarian in the assessment, design, development and evaluation of environmental health program areas, programs, and policies in support of the Department of Defense (DOD) or Department of Navy (DON).


  • Assists in the assessment, design, development, and evaluation of environmental health program areas.
  • Coordinate and integrate the current science and technology available to enhance capabilities effectively and efficiently for the execution of environmental health programs.
  • Coordinate and liaise with relevant organizations and technology activities to guide future environmental health standards and technology. Focus areas include shipboard, installation, military operational water and sanitation programs, as well as related surveillance programs.
  • Advises and consults on technical aspects of environmental health standards.
  • Provide professional technical guidance and field experience to various levels of organizations and clients to safeguard Navy and Marine Corps personnel, beneficiaries, and property.
  • Assess and review environmental health standards for Navy Medicine environmental health programs to ensure standards align with current national, international, DOD, or DON requirements or recommended standards.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for policy development and policy updates supported by current requirements and scientific research.
  • Advise and consult with DON activities and other organizations on technical aspects of environmental health standards and prepares routine correspondence, manuals, instructions, fact sheets, frequently asked questions (FAQs) and other risk communication products. (May include technical consultation to the Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Units to enhance staff professional knowledge of environmental health programs)


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, environmental science, or related field
  • Minimum of five years relevant experience in environmental health programs as outlined in the Naval Manual of Preventive Medicine.
  • Mastery of environmental health concepts, principles, and practices to serve as a technical expert to develop policy and program objectives, and to provide subject matter expert customer assistance.
  • Knowledge and ingenuity to synthesize solutions for complex problem s which may currently have no defined solutions.
  • Possess professional management skills for program implementation and evaluation.
  • Ability to formulate solutions for complex problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and written, especially to engage in formal and informal discussion of technical matters.
  • Ability to develop, draft and revise policies, standards, and technical documents.
  • Ability to review scientific technical documents which impact existing policies and take appropriate follow up actions.
  • US citizenship and ability to obtain Interim DOD Secret clearance is required. Active Secret clearance strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental health, environmental science, or related field.
  • Certification as a Registered Sanitarian and/or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) with NEHA or any equivalent State certification credential
  • Exceptional organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Track record of building relationships across organizations that foster a strong work environment amongst a diverse workforce.
  • Active Secret clearance HIGHLY preferred
