Job Description

GDIT is looking for a Database Administrator – Oracle & SQL Server to join our National Institutes of Health (NIH) CIT Hosting and Storage Services Program.

We are seeking a collaborative and technically skilled engineer to support the delivery of secure, reliable, and high-performing enterprise database services. Our ideal candidate brings hands-on experience supporting Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments and a strong understanding of database operations, performance, security, and lifecycle management.

As a member of our Database Services team, this engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of enterprise database environments while partnering with customers to support their application and data requirements. The successful candidate will monitor and optimize database performance, troubleshoot technical issues, maintain security and compliance, perform upgrades and migrations, and support the continued modernization of database services across on-premises and cloud environments.

 This is a HYBRID role - 3 days on customer site in Bethesda MD.   

This role will require you to obtain and maintain a Public Trust and will require you to provide onsite fingerprinting at a designated facility.  This investigation may review personal and criminal behavior, financial conduct, foreign influence, as well as other adjudications.  

Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, and support Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database environments, including installation, configuration, monitoring, patching, backup and recovery, and routine operations and maintenance.
  • Monitor database availability, capacity, and performance; troubleshoot database, operating system, connectivity, and application-related issues; and implement corrective actions to maintain reliable service.
  • Maintain secure and compliant database environments by implementing required configuration baselines, resolving security vulnerabilities, applying security patches, and supporting security and compliance assessments.
  • Plan and execute database lifecycle activities, including version upgrades, migrations, platform changes, and the transition of databases from on-premises infrastructure to cloud environments.
  • Partner with application owners and developers to support database requirements, including schema and table changes, access and permissions, data migrations, performance optimization, and troubleshooting application/database interactions.
  • Develop and maintain scripts, procedures, documentation, and automation that improve the consistency, efficiency, reliability, and repeatability of database administration and service delivery.
  • Participate in incident resolution, change management, project activities, Agile team execution, and continuous improvement efforts across the Database Services portfolio.
Required Qualifications
  • BS/BA and 4+ years of relevant IT experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Hands-on experience administering Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server in production environments, including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, backup, and recovery.
  • Experience monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing database availability, connectivity, capacity, and performance.
  • Experience securing database environments, including vulnerability remediation, security patching, access management, and configuration compliance.
  • Experience supporting application teams with schema and table changes, data migrations, permissions, SQL execution, and database-related troubleshooting.
  • Experience with database lifecycle upgrades and migrations, including migrations to AWS or Azure, and working knowledge of Windows/Linux, scripting, automation, and monitoring tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server high availability, replication, clustering, disaster recovery, and enterprise monitoring technologies.
  • Experience with AWS and/or Azure database services, cloud database migrations, automation, Infrastructure as Code, or modern database service delivery practices.
  • Relevant Oracle, Microsoft, AWS, or Azure certifications and experience supporting federal government, healthcare, life sciences, or similarly regulated environments.

Salary and Benefit Information

The likely salary range for this position is $107,744 - $126,500. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
