Job Description

TECHNICAL EDITOR ASSOCIATE

GDIT is seeking a detail-oriented technical editor associate to perform first-line copyediting on complex scientific documents generated through the peer review of Department of War-funded grant applications. This role requires strong command of grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and consistency, along with the judgment to make careful, minimal edits without altering scientific meaning or reviewer intent. The ideal candidate will be precise, reliable, and comfortable working within a structured, rule-based editorial process using Microsoft Word, Track Changes, and detailed internal style guides.

Essential Functions
• Perform full-read copyediting of scientific peer review documents for grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, formatting, and consistency.
• Apply AMA-based style guidance and program-specific editorial instructions accurately and consistently.
• Use sound editorial judgment to make minimal, rule-based edits while preserving reviewer voice, scientific meaning, and intended meaning.
• Recognize when an issue falls outside editorial scope and flag or query it appropriately rather than rewriting beyond purview.
• Verify limited factual elements against source materials when instructed, following established editorial guidance.
• Use Microsoft Word Track Changes and comment bubbles to edit transparently and communicate issues clearly to downstream teams.
• Work within a structured, high-volume workflow that requires sustained focus, careful attention to detail, and consistent follow-through.
• Receive and apply editorial feedback across assignments to strengthen consistency and adherence to team standards.
• Communicate professionally and collaborate effectively within a fully remote editorial team supporting federally funded biomedical research programs.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, a science-related field, or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• At least 1 year of relevant editing experience, or an appropriate combination of editing experience and education.
• Strong copyediting skills in grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and consistency.
• Familiarity with the AMA Manual of Style.
• Demonstrated ability to follow detailed style guidance and program-specific instructions with accuracy.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365, particularly Word and Outlook and strong capability in SharePoint.
• Experience using Track Changes and comment-based workflows in Word.
• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and concise editorial queries and comments.
• Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy across full document reads of dense or repetitive material.
• Ability to manage time reliably and work within target levels of effort without sacrificing editorial quality.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in scientific, medical, technical, or grant-related editing.
• Experience editing high-stakes or sensitive documents where meaning must be preserved exactly.
• Experience working in structured editorial workflows, quality review environments, or regulated documentation settings.
• Experience performing limited verification against source documents.
• Experience working independently in a remote environment with limited day-to-day supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and apply multiple rule sets quickly.

Position Details

  • Casual workforce: part-time, on-call (PTOC) position.
  • Fully remote, flexible hours, with occasional higher-volume periods based on project schedules.
  • Editors must be able to provide a minimum of 18 hours of editing time per week during peak production periods.
  • Depending on workload and assignment availability, editors may work up to 40 hours per week but may not exceed 40 hours in a workweek.
  • Availability for training and onboarding during the initial ramp-up period is required.
