Job Description

IBM Netcool Engineer

Transform technology into opportunity as a IBM Netcool Engineer at GDIT. Shape what’s next for mission-critical government projects while shaping what’s next for your engineering career.

Meaningful Work and Personal Impact

An IBM Netcool Engineer designs, implements, and maintains IT infrastructure monitoring systems using the IBM Netcool Operations Insight (NOI) suite/OMNIbus suite to detect, correlate, and resolve network/system events. Key responsibilities include creating event rules, configuring probes/gateways, developing automation, and managing dashboards to ensure high availability for enterprise or telecom environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • System Maintenance: Install, configure, upgrade, and optimize Netcool components, including Omnibus, Impact, Probes, and WebGUI.

    • Configure probe properties, connectivity, security (SSL, authentication), and basic failover mechanisms.

    • Own patching, upgrades, backup and recovery, and platform performance tuning

  • Event Management: Develop and maintain probe rules, filters, and SQL-based event correlation to normalize alarms and reduce noise.

    • Maintain and update lookup files, rules files, and enrichment logic to support alarm normalization and routing.

    • Develop and maintain probe rules for alarm parsing, severity mapping, enrichment, and deduplication.

    • Support incident response and root cause analysis for enterprise network and monitoring outages

  • Automation: Create automations (Impact policies) and runbooks for auto-ticketing, incident resolution, and root cause analysis.

    • Implement basic ObjectServer automations, including triggers, procedures, and SQL scripts, following established standards.

  • Integration: Integrate Netcool with ITSM tools (e.g., ServiceNow, ITPie) and network management systems (SNMP, Syslog, Kafka, REST).

    • Integrate NetCool with existing network element managers (e.g. Cisco Prime, Arista CloudVision, Aruba AirWave, JunoSpace).

  • Monitoring & Reporting: Build custom dashboards and generate reports on network health and performance metrics.

    • Analyze logs from probes, ObjectServer, and middleware to identify root causes.

    • Support incident, problem, and change management processes.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • Active Secret or Top-Secret Clearance

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or equivalent experience and 8 yrs of work experience.

  • 3+ years hands-on experience with IBM Netcool/OMNIbus, or similar large-scale event management platforms, with a deep understanding of their internal mechanics and limitations.

  • 5+ Experience in a Network Operations Center (NOC) or Network Management System (NMS) environment (i.e. large-scale enterprise monitoring).

  • One or more relevant certifications (i.e. ITIL, Security+, Network+, CCNA, IBM Certified Administrator or Associate)

Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in IBM Netcool Suite: OMNIbus, Impact, Probes, Gateways, WebGUI.

  • Operating Systems: Proficient in Linux/Unix administration.

  • Scripting/Programming: Shell, Perl, Python, or JavaScript.

  • Database Knowledge: SQL and database management (Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL).

  • Networking Protocols: SNMP, Syslog, Telnet, SSH.
