Job Description

Join GDIT’s NIH CIT Hosting & Storage Services (HSS) program as a Sr. VMware Engineer. You will own the compute and virtualization platform across two active data centers (B12 and Sterling), partnering with Storage and Network Services to deliver resilient, compliant infrastructure for NIH customers. You’ll combine rigorous platform operations with pragmatic automation, rapid security patching, and customer‑centric service delivery.

This is a HYBRID role - 3 days on customer site in Bethesda MD.

This role will require you to obtain and maintain a Public Trust and will require you to provide onsite fingerprinting at a designated facility.  This investigation may review personal and criminal behavior, financial conduct, foreign influence, as well as other adjudications.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and enhance VMware vSphere 8/ESXi clusters and vCenter (Linked Mode) across B12 & Sterling; execute HA/DRS, capacity and lifecycle management.
  • Manage Cisco UCS B‑series blades (service profiles, firmware), SAN boot (iSCSI), and NetApp ONTAP (NFS datastores) in a FlexPod pattern; provision/decommission boot LUNs and datastores in partnership with the Storage team.
  • Maintain the Cisco HyperFlex DMZ platform; ensure support coverage, patching, and propose a migration path to supported alternatives.
  • Drive security and compliance: apply VMware advisories quickly; manage vROps/Aria Operations and Log Insight; forward to Splunk; remediate Tenable/GPO findings with controlled rollouts and customer validation.
  • Architect application‑level HA across sites (no infrastructure DR provided); collaborate with Network Services on load‑balancing and Cisco ISE requirements.
  • Respond to ServiceNow incidents/requests; participate in xMatters on‑call rotations; triage ScienceLogic alerts; adhere to SMO AIS/ASR authorization and billing processes; document changes and runbooks.
  • Lead vSphere upgrade/migration planning (vSphere 8 EOL next October); evaluate VCF 9 feasibility vs. hardware constraints and alternate strategies aligned to HHS/NIH direction.
  • Build automation for routine workflows using PowerCLI/PowerShell (and/or Ansible/Python) given the retirement of Aria Automation.
  • Support customer events (continuity tests, planned weekend upgrades) and provide excellent technical partnership across NIH customer teams.

Required Qualifications

  • BS/BA or equivalent experience; 8+ years in enterprise VMware operations (vSphere/ESXi/vCenter, HA/DRS).
  • Hands‑on with Cisco UCS B‑series, SAN boot, NetApp ONTAP (NFS/iSCSI); strong storage & compute integration skills.
  • Experience with vROps/Aria Operations, Log Insight, Splunk, Tenable, and controlled GPO deployments.
  • Proficiency with ServiceNow, xMatters, and ScienceLogic monitoring.
  • PowerShell/PowerCLI automation; strong documentation/runbook skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of VCF 9, NSX‑T, vSAN, and vSphere Replication.
    • Cloud migration experience: Azure Migrate and AWS Migration Evaluator.
    • Familiarity with Cohesity file services modernization and CyberArk operations.
