LINUX OS ENGINEER

YOUR IMPACT

Own your opportunity to support national defense. Your work will help keep critical operations secure and connected across the global enterprise directly, contributing to a mission that protects our nation every day.

CIS is growing, and we invite both our experienced incumbents and new team members to be part of what’s next. Incumbents bring invaluable mission insight, while new talent adds fresh ideas and energy. Together, we’ll strengthen continuity and drive the next generation of innovation.

MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT

As a Linux OS Engineer supporting CIS, you will engineer, secure, and sustain enterprise Linux operating systems across mission critical, multinetwork environments. You will develop standardized OS baselines, maintain platform configurations, support major upgrades, and deliver reliable, high-performance Linux services that underpin core infrastructure functions. Your work directly enhances system availability, security posture, and operational readiness across complex environments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engineer, build, and maintain standardized Linux OS baselines and templates, ensuring secure, compliant, and current configurations
  • Administer and optimize Linux platforms across physical, virtual, and cloud environments, including kernel updates, service configurations, and performance tuning
  • Troubleshoot complex Linux OS issues involving authentication, services, storage, networking, certificates, and multidomain integrations
  • Implement Linux OS lifecycle management, including major version upgrades, EOL transitions, and integration of new builds into production
  • Support identity, configuration, and infrastructure services on Linux systems, including PAM/SSSD, LDAP/Kerberos, and related enterprise components
  • Maintain engineering documentation, SOPs, OS build artifacts, and configuration guidance required for accreditation, change control, and operational sustainment
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, cybersecurity, etc. to validate requirements, resolve issues, and maintain secure technical baselines
  • Integrate Linux builds into virtualized and cloud ecosystems; perform validation, compatibility testing, and dependency analysis across environments

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in an IT-related field, or 10-12+ years of relevant IT experience in lieu of a degree
  • CERTIFICATION: Meet DoD 8140 Information Assurance Workforce certification requirements (e.g. Security+ CE, etc.)
  • ADDITIONAL REQUIRED CERTIFICATION: LPIC-1 Linux Professional Institute Certification or Vendor Certified Administrator (e.g., Red Hat Certified Systems Administrator (RHCSA))
  • CLEARANCE: Active TS/SCI clearance with a favorable polygraph
  • Hands-on experience engineering and administering enterprise Linux systems (e.g., RHEL, CentOS, Rocky, Ubuntu Server, or similar)
  • Strong proficiency with shell scripting, configuration automation, and secure configuration practices including STIG implementation
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex OS, networking, security, and service level issues across distributed infrastructures
  • US citizenship required

  • LOCATION: Onsite
