Job Description

Our 100% remote agile development team is looking for a Senior API/Microservices Developer to help us deliver top-quality IT Modernization for our Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) customers.

You will work directly with our government customers and with other GDIT developers and business analysts to create advanced software tools tailored to scientific applications. You’ll apply new approaches, principles, methods, techniques and tools compatible with the research environment within EPA. You’ll be a creative problem-solver, understand IT solutions from a users’ perspective and contribute to strategies for a modern integrated IT environment.  

MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT

The API / Microservices Developer requires in-depth knowledge of modular API design and persistence architecture using Spring Boot. The role involves collaborative interactions with EPA staff and contractors, ensuring architecture aligns with legacy systems and supports efficient data flow. The successful candidate will document design and implementation techniques using tools like Atlassian’s Confluence. The developer will optimize services for performance, scalability, and security while adhering to best practices. The selected candidate will resolve development and deployment issues, working closely with API developers, data engineers, and other technical staff to ensure seamless integration with existing databases and applications.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

Bring your engineering expertise along with a drive for innovation to GDIT. You must have:

  • Technical skills (bolded items are hard requirements):
    • Core Java (version 21)
    • Spring Boot ecosystem including Spring-data repositories
    • A strong knowledge of REST API design using Spring controllers.
    • JPA / Hibernate
    • Relational database design (Oracle, etc)
    • Junit / Mockito
    • Git and GitHub
    • Must be able, and willing, to utilize AI tools (particularly, Copilot)
    • Bruno or other API testing tools
    • Open-API / Swagger
    • Maven
    • Microservice architecture
    • Performance optimization
    • Experience with government or regulated industry applications is a plus
    • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills
  • Security clearance level: must be able to obtain EPA Public Trust Level 4
  • US citizenship required

Key Responsibilities:

  • Modernization & Refactoring: Modernize a legacy application using Spring Boot, Cloud, and modern Java (17+), replacing legacy components with modular, testable, and maintainable code
  • Microservices Architecture: Break down monolithic components into independent, loosely coupled modules/microservices, ensuring proper communication via REST and event-driven patterns
  • Integration: Integrate with existing EPA systems, databases, and APIs, ensuring data consistency and compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Security: Implement and enforce security best practices, including authentication, authorization, and data protection
  • Testing & Quality: Develop comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests; conduct code reviews and mentor junior developers

  • Ability to work effectively in a remote team environment.

  • Ability to maintain an organized workflow, with a high degree of attention to detail.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Education: Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science
  • Experience: 9–12+ years in Java enterprise application development

Salary and Benefit Information

The likely salary range for this position is $112,840 - $132,250. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
