Mega events like the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games put extraordinary demands on the agencies responsible for keeping people, venues and missions secure. The work that makes those events successful begins long before the opening ceremony, rooted in detailed planning, trusted partnerships and disciplined execution across the federal government.
Matt Hayden, Matt Hayden, vice president of cyber and emerging threats for the Intelligence and Homeland Security Division at GDIT, sat down with Jessica Huckabee, program manager on the Global Security, Engineering and Supply Chain contract, and Nahid Sultana, international project manager at GDIT, to talk about how GDIT teams work with the U.S. Department of State (DoS) to prepare for and navigate the security spikes that mega events create worldwide.
"Success isn't determined during the event," Sultana said. "It starts months in advance through detailed planning, close coordination and strong collaboration." GDIT manages 24/7 global operations across 50 countries, adapting to each nation's distinct legal, banking, infrastructure, cultural and security environment while delivering consistent, secure and reliable solutions. A key example is FIFA Pass, a secure priority appointment scheduling system that links verified ticket holders to visa interviewing, which GDIT helped the DoS integrate into its existing operational workflow.
Huckabee's program focuses on the protective technology and countermeasures that keep Diplomatic Security Service personnel and missions secure on the ground during mega events. "The program enables network and secure communications, 24/7 tracking of personnel worldwide across more than 265 embassies and consulates and early warning of rocket, artillery and mortar threats for several embassies," Huckabee said. "The team also supports integration of countermeasures, lights and sirens for vehicles and radios in use all over the world."
Looking ahead to the next generation of mega events, Hayden pointed to counter-unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), biometrics and emerging technologies as the tools that will define the protection landscape. "Mega events really demonstrate what's possible when strong planning, trusted partnership and disciplined execution come together," Sultana said. "That's the commitment GDIT brings to every mission, helping our government partners deliver trusted solutions not only for today's challenges, but for the next generation of mega events."
