GDIT Awarded $121.8 Million Contract to Modernize Federal Student Aid Processing System Supporting 10 Million Students

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT), a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), announced today that it was awarded the $121.8 million Award Eligibility Determination (AED) contract by the U.S. Department of Education to modernize the Federal Student Aid (FSA) processing system. The 10-year contract has an 18-month base period with eight one-year and one six-month option periods.

FSA administers the nation’s largest source of student financial aid programs, supporting more than 10 million students annually. Under this contract, GDIT will build a new AED system in the cloud to replace the legacy mainframe processing system. The new system will improve the overall customer experience, as well as deliver cost savings and operational flexibility to quickly scale in response to any future regulations or requirements.

GDIT will migrate mission critical legacy applications to a modern architecture, with the new AED system hosted in AWS GovCloud. The system will use easily packaged software applications that facilitate faster development, testing, and deployment.

"We are proud to continue our support to the U.S. Department of Education, and this modernization contract enables GDIT to further advance FSA’s higher education mission,” said Jylinda Johnson, GDIT vice president and general manager for Government Operations. “The new system will allow students to more efficiently receive federal aid to help pay for college or career school.”

The AED contract continues GDIT’s long history of supporting and modernizing the U.S. Department and Education and FSA systems, which includes making the Free Application for Federal Student Aid available for millions of students.
