Systems Engineer Senior

GDIT is looking for a Systems Engineer Senior to join our team in the Huntsville, AL location.

Detailed Description:

Provide highly experienced technical hands-on engineering for an enterprise with both Linux and Windows system administration and IT security operations for the Alabama Supercomputer Program in Huntsville, Alabama. The Systems Engineer Senior will provide technical direction and design to a team of systems administrators, with an emphasis on cybersecurity compliance and customer satisfaction. Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and upgrades for advanced level support of server and storage systems used for network operations center, security operations center web services, applications and database systems, and internal infrastructure systems supplied across virtual and physical Windows and Linux servers. Duties include securing, patching, upgrading, and monitoring onsite and offsite servers for malicious activity, and creating backups for onsite and offsite systems.

Primary daily tasks will include: 

Manages day-to-day information system solutions and technical support in one or more functional areas. Participates in planning and designing systems to meet the evolving needs of the business. Manages all information systems policies and documentation including backup strategies, user training materials, network maps, and ensure security policies compliance. Provides direction, purpose, and motivation for the systems administrators.  Provides detailed systems health status, patch compliance, systems upgrades, backups, resiliency, fix actions, disaster recovery, systems customer support and provide technical systems recommendations to the Systems Engineering Manager.

  • Independently provides technical interpretation and solutions in the management of networks, software, hardware, configurations, and architectures.
  • Troubleshoots system hardware and software specific issues.
  • Trains end users on the proper use of hardware and software.
  • Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages.
  • Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels.
  • Ensures workstation/server data integrity by implementing standard software and hardware solutions.
  • Independently ensures data/media recoverability by following a schedule of system backups and database archive operations.
  • Conducts hardware and software audits of workstations and servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
  • Ensures that performance and security of computers meet the needs of network users.
  • Applies practical knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience.
  • May evaluate existing systems and assist with planning long-term strategies.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with Windows and Linux systems. Requires a B.S. degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Systems architecture solutions from the beginning to end (use-case analysis, design, vendor quoting, proposing, acquisition, implementing, and maintenance).
  • Technical project experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Linux command line interface/CLI
  • Shell Scripting (Bash, KSH, ZSH, FISH, etc.)
  • Webserver configuration experience (Apache/NGINX/IIS)
  • DNS configuration and maintenance (BIND, Primary/Secondary setups, DNSSec configurations, RPZs, Views, ACLs)
  • Linux networking (tcpdump, ss, ip, nmap, nmcli)
  • Linux monitoring (nagios, sensu, collectd)
  • Linux firewall (iptables, firewalld, or nftables)
  • Linux virtualization (KVM/QEMU, OpenVZ)
  • Linux database (MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Influx)
  • Virtualization - VMWare / Hyper-V, Hyper Converged Infrastructure and high availability, performance monitoring and tuning
  • Storage – vSAN, Storage spaces direct, NetApp Ontap
  • Windows – active directory, group policy, Microsoft 365
  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager and Virtual Machine Manager
  • Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, Active Directory
  • RAID
  • Multi-factor authentication
  • PowerShell
  • Vulnerability scanning (Nessus/Tenable.sc or similar)
  • Security operations SIEM tools (Juniper JSA, IBM QRadar)
  • DUO
  • Federation – SAML, SSO, Kerberos
  • Backups – Microsoft Data Protection Manager
  • Basic networking experience
  • Linux and Windows certifications desirable

Salary and Benefit Information

The likely salary range for this position is $96,034 - $120,750. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
