Job Description

GDIT is seeking a skilled Data Scientist Consultant with experience supporting federal health or commercial agencies, capable of driving data-driven decision-making through advanced analytics, machine learning, and statistical modeling. The ideal candidate will lead and contribute to a range of initiatives including health informatics, predictive analytics, and program evaluation, with responsibilities spanning data wrangling, visualization, and algorithm development to improve public health outcomes.

This role requires strong analytical skills and hands-on experience with Generative AI (GenAI) tools and frameworks. In this role, you'll contribute to the design, development, and deployment of data science models, including applications of large language models (LLMs), generative models, and AI-powered automation systems. Equally important are strong client-facing and communication skills to effectively translate complex data into actionable insights, manage stakeholder expectations, guide junior team members, and influence mission-critical decisions through strategic data storytelling and domain knowledge.

**This role is hybrid and must be able to travel to to Silver Spring, VA and Gaithersburg, MD

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement machine learning models for structured and unstructured data
  • Build and fine-tune Generative AI models (e.g., LLMs, diffusion models) using platforms such as OpenAI, Hugging Face, or Anthropic
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate models into production systems
  • Conduct A/B testing and statistical analysis to evaluate model performance
  • Prepare clear documentation and present insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Stay current with AI/ML research, particularly in GenAI and NLP advancements
  • Oversee project resources, documentation, and compliance with federal policies and performance guidelines.
  • Strong consulting acumen to engage with federal health clients, translate business needs into data-driven solutions, manage stakeholder expectations, and deliver strategic insights that support mission outcomes.

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, computer science or a related field
  • 3–5 years of experience in data science, machine learning, or applied AI
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in libraries such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Hugging Face Transformers
  • Experience working with LLMs (e.g., GPT, Claude, LLaMA) or generative models (e.g., VAEs, GANs, Diffusion Models)
  • Familiarity with prompt engineering, fine-tuning, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
  • Experience deploying models using cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Proficiency in SQL and working with large datasets
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex findings into actionable insights
  • 3+ years of consulting experience, with a demonstrated ability to understand/grasp business needs, manage stakeholder expectations, and provide strategic direction and guidance on emerging AI technology trends
  • Eligibility for Public Trust Clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain HHS/FDA Suitability background investigation

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Exposure to MLOps practices, version control, CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with ethical considerations in AI model development and deployment

Salary and Benefit Information

The likely salary range for this position is $183,498 - $195,500. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
